The middle layer is called the cortex, which is responsible for the texture and strength of the hair. The cuticle is the top most layer of the hair, which shields the bottom layers from getting damaged. It contains the dead skin cells that overlap each other and form a protective layer. Any external or internal damage on the cuticle leads to exposing of the middle layer—cortex, the protein content gets disturbed and split ends occur.
