Natural ways of pearly white teeth – How to whiten yellow teeth

The reason behind a beautiful smile is your teeth. When you smile most people think of gleaming white teeth as perfection. Here are a few tips to make them shiny and healthy.
A row of bright pearly whites displays confidence and good health. Dentists will tell you that the best way to get healthy teeth is to not just brush regularly but also floss daily. This combination is necessary for complete oral health care. There are lots of ways to whiten teeth and keep them stain free, so read our tips and tricks, and choose the one that is best for you.

Foods such as celery, carrots, and apples stimulate saliva and can remove food debris. Pulped strawberries have anti-oxidant properties and can be used as an alternative to toothpaste (with baking soda), removing stains, and plaque.

  • Try to avoid drinking and eating foodstuff that will damage your teeth. For example, if you are addicted to coffee, it can cause your teeth to lose its white shine. There are certain foods that contain tannin (like wine), which can cause discoloration of the teeth.
  • Brushing and flossing daily will remove any food residue or plaque on the teeth, which is the reason why cavities are formed and why teeth turn yellow. It will also protect the enamel of your teeth.
  • Soft drinks, tea, coffee, and tobacco can leave ugly stains on your teeth.
  • Use a mouthwash specific for teeth whitening. This will not just kill the bad bacteria in your mouth and give you fresh breath; it will also whiten your teeth.
  • Simple ways to remove stains include using baking soda and lemon to brush teeth, or soda and salt, but be sure to rinse thoroughly afterwards, so as not to damage the enamel and only do it once a week.

Protect your teeth further by eating green vegetables such as kale or broccoli, as they contain mineral compounds that coat the teeth in a protective film to help prevent stains.

Easy ways for winter proof makeup | Winter proof makeup tips

Is wintry weather wreaking havoc with your looks? Don’t despair—with these tips and tricks, your makeup can withstand everything the season throws at it?

With the onset of the winter season, give your makeup regime a makeover too. Make-up artist Annalia Zhimomi says maintaining a well-moisturized skin is a necessity.

After cleansing, toning and moisturizing, “the next step is to prepare and prime your skin with a primer so that your foundation is applied smoothly and evenly.”

“I would recommend investing in a high quality primer as it makes sure that it lasts longer. It also avoids patchiness, clogging of pores, breakouts and even works in improving the quality of your skin,” Zhimomi said.

Women with dry and mature skin should use a hydrating primer. So it is better to follow the tips which may help to give you beautiful makeup.

For those who have oily skin or a mix of oily and dry skin should try modifying primer. For discolored skin, one can apply color corrector primer.

Women should be careful while selecting foundation too. It may affect your skin with rashes and pores. Select the foundation based on your skin type, i.e., dry or oily skin.

“For dry skin, liquid foundation with a dewy effect based foundation is good. They should be applied with a beauty blender (sponge) as it avoids skin from becoming flaky,” she said.

“Oily skin should be tackled with a Mattifying light weight foundation and it must be sealed with powder as this will help the makeup to last longer,” she added.

Another important tip she shared is foundation should be applied with the help of a buffing brush in circular motion as it helps minimize pores. If the foundation applied on dry or flaky skin, it becomes awkward look. So, it’s better to select good foundation cream that suits your skin type.

For the lips, she says stick to dark rich colors. Winter causes more dryness and cracks. So, it’s better to choose a bright color to lips.

“One can go for velvety and berry shades like red berry and plum hues,” she said.

Winter weather results in dry patches that can build up dead skin on your skin’s surface. This helps to leave you a less radiant skin. This gives you glow to back by using a gentle exfoliate once a week, with the layers of moisturizer while your skin is still damp. This helps to create a barrier that is between your face and is a wind by applying them with a richer and extra moisturizing emollient. Thus, the salve note is that for more protection and is put up with a parka’s hood. It is better to wear a hat and a scarf that you can bundle up around your neck and nose.

The icy cold or wind has to be left with an inflamed and red face that can camouflage it with a green tinted moisturizer. This is best with the redness and is confined to smaller areas that is by applying it with a color and can be corrected by using a concealer to those spots. The look for moisturizers with better ingredients is to treat truly painful areas with a 1% hydrocortisone cream.

Eye makeup tips

Wintery winds are sleet and snow that causes makeup meltdowns. This fights off sooty smudges and can smears by applying it with a waterproof mascara. It is better to use eyeliner and shadow on the upper lids only to reduce the risk of makeup migration.

Leave it for about 5 – 15 minutes. Apply a facial tissue on your face to absorb it with any excess and head to bed which works better. You can also try natural home remedies to treat dry skin.

Expert tips to follow for your best hair ever – How to get long hair

Having a good hair depends on a bunch of different factors: Everything from your workouts, to how you sleep, to your scalp’s production of natural oils, or sebum, impacts your strands’ quality of life. But, there are a few things that essentially hold true for everyone. We tapped hair stylist extraordinaire Halli Bivona from the John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman for her advice about how to best nurture a Gisele-like ‘do.

When to wash your hair?

Fine hair: Ones in two days work best. This way it won’t get too greasy, but you’re still allowing your natural oils to coat and nourish the hair.

Medium to coarse hair: Anywhere from every third day to once a week. Thicker hair takes longer to absorb natural oils and appears less greasy over time than its finer hair counterparts. Bivona recommends doing a deep conditioning masque once a week for 15 minutes or longer.

Chemically damaged hair: Bivona recommends washing hair based on its texture, but leaving conditioners in overnight. Tie up your locks and put a shower cap on while sleeping—this way you’ll protect your pillow and your natural heat will warm the conditioning treatment, which allows it to penetrate the cuticle layer and give a really deep conditioning.

How much product to use for your hair?

Two quarter size helpings of shampoo will give you a good lather, and the same goes for conditioner. Work the product from your ends to your roots and let sit for a few minutes. Most of the people don’t rinse their conditioner out properly, which can compromise the blowout. Adding an extra minute or so to your rinse will ensure that you’ve washed out everything.

When to cut your hair?

Shoulder length and shorter: To maintain that precise length, you need to get a cut every 4-6 weeks.

Below shoulders: Trim every 8 weeks.

Insider tip: Bivona has been noticing a resurgence of women with long hair who avoid haircuts for fear of loss of length. But, as a hairdresser may have told you, it actually does more harm than good. The longer you leave a cut untouched, the more split ends you’ll accumulate. Split ends, then begin to travel further up your hair follicle, which can cause more dryness and damage. To avoid damaging long hair, get a cut once a season or every 8 weeks.

When to cut out hot tools?

It’s okay to use hot tools a few times a week, but if you use them every day, you are definitely causing damage.

Insider tip: Use a heat protestant serum or spray any time you’re styling your hair. A lot of tools go up to 450 degrees, but the hotter the tool; the less time you need it to achieve your desired look.

When to color your hair?

A single process: Every 4 weeks.

Highlights: Every 6-8 weeks.

Insider tip: “I love a little root with highlights,” Bivona says. “I feel that it adds some contrast to the hair while also protecting it from over-processing.”

Tips to prevent hair loss

Don’t wash your hair every day

Stop washing your hair daily. This makes your hair dry and frizzy. The harmful chemicals in shampoo make your hair dry and also lead to dry scalp. Thus, try this rising with water, scrubbing the scalp and conditioning at the end is the most important precautions to be followed while washing your hair. It is better to have a head bath for every alternative day. You can have a hair wash for every 2 – 3 days. This won’t risk your stripping and is natural protective oil that keeps you shiny and healthy. Don’t over wash your hair that can dull the vibrancy of your hair color.

Stop using too much conditioner

Apply conditioner at the end of your hair wash, as it keeps your hair hydrated, but don’t apply on the scalp. The amount and the size of a dime are trying to disperse them evenly throughout the hair. This can disperse evenly the hair. This helps to protect your hair from dust and pollution.

Never use a deep conditioner

You should not choose a deep conditioner as it can dry and damage your hair. This causes split from coloring or heat styling. The color processes your hair with a deep conditioner as a week leading up to with a chemical process. This helps to prepare your hair for battle and seal the hair cuticle to prevent breakage.

Doesn’t brush wet hair

Wet hair is weaker and dry and this helps to treat it carefully. The worst and tug a brush is by forcing tangles. Try brushing your hair before hopping in the shower to work out knots and air out the roots. Use a wide toothed comb to work the conditioner through your strands. Use a comb to work out tangles from the bottom that works your way up to the roots for least damage.

Do not rub your wet hair with a towel

The worst thing that you don’t vigorously rub is with a towel. Gently blot instead of roughing your hair with dry towel. Blotting will not rough the cuticle that causes frizz. Use a paper towel to dry your hair. Thus, the gentlest method stops rubbing wet hair with a dry towel to protect your hair.

Over hydration – Is it possible to drink too much water?

All of your major systems of your body depend on water to work properly. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help in reducing body temperature, flushing waste products out of the body. As water levels in your cells rise, they begin to swell, causing a variety of health problems. When the water level increased in the body, then it leads to water intoxication or low levels of sodium in the blood clinically called hyponatremia.

Causes

The amount of water in the body can be controlled by urine production in the kidneys and the thirst response. Over hydration can be caused due to drinking too much water during exercise, uncontrolled diabetes, Psychiatric conditions.

Increase in dehydration is due to reduction in blood plasma volume as blood flow to the skin is decreased. As blood flow reduces cooling and leading to higher body temperature.

Symptoms

  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Lethargy
  • Restlessness and irritability

  • Try to eat snacks with salt, like pretzels or chips before and after long, hot workouts.
  • Avoid taking aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen during any race or long workout, as it may interfere with kidney function.

This is capable of handling too much liquid at one time, which will process it much harder and slower. Thus, water remains in the stomach and vomiting the result. Drinking excess water leads to vomiting and dehydration. Over hydration alleviate the water intoxication problem.
  • Change in brain function: The effect of over hydration on the brain has some serious repercussions. The hyponatremia of the sodium particles is less compared to the given amount of water present in the blood. Thus, the brain cells will fill much faster with fluids. This leads to mild to severe headaches and to seizures and coma. The swelling of the brain is a very dangerous condition that as in rare cases leads to death.
  • Mood and energy fluctuation: Hyponatremia has an individual’s mood and energy levels. This may feel lethargic and tired, while at any other times that you feel irritable and is restless. The two extremes occur at the same time that is related to mood swings. But, you will also feel muscle spasms, muscle pain and overall weakness in the body.

Unhealthy drinks for your body: Drinks you should avoid

If they’re on the Paleo diet train or hitting the gym five days a week, or both, the people want to stay healthy and in shape! That’s not to say we don’t enjoy our indulgences; everyone grabs a doughnut or a sugar-laden iced Frappuccino now and then. What’s the real harm, if you keep to a healthy diet most of the time, right?

Unfortunately, sometimes your favorite splurge beverage can be a real diet killer, filled with calories and unwanted sugars. Grabbing a juice from the cold case may seem like a healthy choice; after all, it’s natural, right? But that same juice that seems so healthy can be loaded with hidden sugars and empty calories. In fact, many of our most beloved drinks carry those hidden calories or sugars that people miss.

Have a look at an example, a tall pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks — the quintessential fall treat loyal consumers wait for all year — has 300 calories and 39 grams of sugar. 300 calories! This causes you to crash and feel sluggish later. You should go and choose for the calories from real food that includes protein, complex carbs and ideally fiber too.

Chick-Fil-A Lemonade

Chick-Fil-A is known for sweeter-than-sweet tea and so you may choose lemonade as a “healthier” option. A 9-ounce serving of lemonade has 170 calories and 43 grams of sugar.

Rockstar Energy Drink

We’ve all had the urge to bump up the caffeine levels when the 2:00 p.m. slump hits or you just need the extra energy, but an 8-ounce Rockstar Energy Drink will set you back 140 calories and a whopping 31 grams of sugar. You’ll need all the energy you get from the caffeine just to work it off.

Starbucks Eggnog Latte

You may want to grab an eggnog latte to get in the spirit of the season. However, keep in mind that a short eight-ounce eggnog latte has 230 calories and 24 grams of sugar.

Jamba Juice Mega Mango Smoothie

Smoothies are those hidden calories-killers no one ever remembers. An 8-ounce serving of the Mega Mango smoothie from Jamba Juice has 115 calories and 26 grams of sugar. Most serving sizes are 16 ounces, so you could be consuming 52 grams of sugar in one drink.

Tropicana Fruit Fury Twister

You may not think of high calorie content and lots of sugar, but the Fruit Fury Twister actually has 140 calories per serving. Even worse, a serving has 24 grams of sugar. And all 3 of the bottle sizes (10, 20, and 96) are packing 2.5 servings so you’ll get more than double the diet crash.

Emmy Rossum

Inspired by Grace Kelly on her wedding day, Emmy Rossum’s tiara-topped braided chignon imparts a polished elegance. Rick Gradone, the hair stylist behind the show stopping ‘do, explain how to pull off a crown in the twenty-first century: “The sleekness of this look keeps it more elegant and contemporary, whereas softer and fuller styles make tiaras look more prom queen or pageant-like. The look has to be as clean and Kempt as possible.” Gradone also recommended following the shape of the headpiece for maximum impact. “Since this Chopard tiara was angled into a v, I drew a middle part that directly paralleled its peak and allowed me to sculpt the hair into a similar silhouette,” he said. “Then I crafted the braid at the nape of the neck so that the end of the tiara met right in the middle of the bun, which gives the eye a nice line to follow.”Emmy-Rossum1

Alexa Chung

“Fresh flowers add softness and romance to a wedding hairstyle,” said George Northwood, who works with Chung. This charming floral crown paired with her ombré waves imparts a youthful, bohemian vibe perfect for a laid-back wedding. To keep the crown in place, Northwood recommended lightly becoming the top of the hair. “Teasing allows bobby pins to grip to something more substantial and helps anchor the crown of the head,” he explained.Alexa-Chung2

Amanda Seyfried

Renato Campora, who sculpted this updo, suggested choosing this look to match the unabashed drama of an ornate gown. Inspired by Botticelli, Campora crafted a flawless braided bun that coiled around to epic proportions thanks to a few extensions. But the key here, he said, is the slicked-back base: “A sleek and clean ponytail to start is essential since it’s the foundation of the entire look.” Add to that a quarter-size amount of Alterna Bamboo Smooth Kendi Oil for shine and a blast of Oribe Superfine Strong Hair Spray to hold, and you’ve got a look fit for a queen.Amanda_seyfried3

Ashley Madekwe

Although the “Revenge” star’s Jennifer Behr broach looked glitzy, her loose and textured top knot added contrast for a more effortless and less contrived feel. In order to balance out the sizable hair ornament, Sally Hershberger’s wedding hair wizard Ruben Colon said the side swept bangs are essential. “It makes the clip more proportional and also keeps the style looking more youthful,” he said. To tidy up a top knot just a bit, Colon recommended spritzing hairspray on the backside of a paddle brush and using it as a tool to smooth the surface of the bun.Ashley-Madekwe4

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence’s updo provides the best of both worlds, with its tousled and organic framework that flows into a more carefully crafted low chignon. “It is still formal, but fun and romantic,” said Jen Atkin, who counts Lawrence as a client. “This look would be great for a fall wedding, or for a modern bride who isn’t afraid of playing with texture in her hair.” To get such great texture and movement, Atkin said it’s crucial to start with a nourished scalp. She recommended Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Damage and Color Repair Nourishing Shampoo and Daily Conditioner to prep, followed by Charlotte Ronson A Perfect Mess Beach Hair for ruffled waves that can then be pinned up in a bun at the nape of the neck.jennifer-lawrence5

Jessica Alba

“A ponytail is the simplest way to style the hair, making this perfect for a no-fuss bride who still wants to look elegant and polished,” said Campora, who gave Alba this look for the Ralph Lauren spring 2013 show. “It allows you to move freely so it’s comfortable, but this one is still timeless and classic.” Campora specifically placed Alba’s pony high up at the crown of the head and softly curled the tail to give it “bounce and movement like Jessica Rabbit,” he said.jessica-alba6

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough combines a braid in front and twists in the back for an intentionally unkempt style that feels more casual. “This would be a good alternate option for girls who want a natural-looking updo for a daytime beach wedding instead of the standard beachy waves,” said Colon. Since it relies so heavily on bobby pins, Colon recommended this look for shoulder-length hair in particular.julianne-hough7

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington demonstrates how to take a break from the traditional hair broach or tiara with a more fun and playful oversized bow. Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, the coiffeur behind the half-up ‘do, stressed that placement is imperative when working with a bow. “It needs to sit on the side and not directly on top of the head,” she said, explaining that the latter looks too Minnie Mouse rather than modern Madonna. Sturdivant-Drew recommended a voluminous bouffant and side swept bang to balance out the jumbo bow, and suggested curling the rest of the hair in opposite directions to keep the waves from settling into each other.Kerry-Washington8

Lucy Liu

“A fresh and cool braid offsets a powerful and more mature ball gown,” said hairstylist Andy LeCompte, referencing Liu’s voluminous dress that she wore to this year’s Golden Globes. “It makes the whole style look edgy rather than a lady.” What’s more, such intricate plaits still tie in the decadence of a statement-making gown without turning it fussy. To get the look, LeCompte constructed a reverse French braid around the head on both sides of the part, “which gives hair more volume and also helps to show off the dimensions of the braid on dark hair.” Once both braids meet underneath one ear, he suggested tying them together with elastic, splitting the hair apart right above the elastic and pulling the tail through the hole to exaggerate the shape of the fishtail and get it started. Wella Texture Touch Reworkable Clay helps to give the lengths some hold and texture as you braid to the ends.Lucy-Liu9

Michelle Williams

When it comes to short hair, Colon said it’s all but essential to utilize accessories to give cropped looks that extra panache. “It’s also a great excuse to get away with a particularly bold piece of jewelry,” he said. Case in point: Michelle Williams’ diamond-encrusted Fred Leighton headband that gussied up her dramatically parted, shaggy pixie cut. To get her piece-y style, Colon recommended dipping fingertips in pomade, such as Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Sculpting Pomade, and lightly rubbing select ends of hair for a textured definition, rather than raking the product directly through the whole head (which gives off a clumpier look).Michelle-Williams10

Naomi Watts

Hair guru Giannandrea conjured up a refreshing take on the classic French twist with Watts’ deconstructed and windswept version of the Oscars. “I wanted to pull the hair away from the face without it looking too constricting of too coiffed,” he explained. “Its height and softened texture give the style a more womanly sensibility.” Giannandrea recommended using no tools other than hands for this look. After rough-drying hair, use fingers to lift the front for volume and to smooth back the sides, then wind the ends into a disheveled roll in the back—while pinning stray hairs into separate twists where necessary.Naomi-Watts11

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman’s elaborate updo proves hair stylist Mara Roszak is more than just a one-trick pony: the twisted bun placed off to one side paired with the faint braid and the gilded pin give this look interest from every angle. “Nicole’s dress was very sexy and glamorous and I wanted to contrast that with a cool, textured updo that was a bit tousled,” Roszak said of her inspiration. To define wavy hair’s natural texture and highlight movement before pinning it up, she recommended touching up hair on the sides and top with a one-inch curing iron, being sure to take random sections so that the waves are not too perfect and look more organic.Nicole-Kidman12

Rachel Weisz

“It’s quite strong and confident with the slick and architectural loop, but also very feminine with the deep side part,” explained hairstylist Ben Skervin of the samurai-inspired graphic bun he sculpted on Weisz for the Los Angeles premiere of Oz: The Great and Powerful. Skervin recommended using a bungee band instead of a traditional elastic when securing the ponytail “so you don’t have to fiddle with pulling the tail through,” and also suggested placing the pony higher up at the occipital bone rather than at the base of the neck to leave room for the tuck-and-rolled loop underneath. A healthy coating of the Vidal Sassoon Mega Firm Hold Gel shellacks the style, while a light misting of shine-enhancing spray adds a patent-like finish to it.Rachel-Weisz13

Reese Wither-spoon

Reese Witherspoon channeled an old-Hollywood movie star at the Oscars this year with Veronica Lake-esque waves, which were made modern with brushed out, loose curls instead of stiff and cramped coils. “It’s pure beauty and glamour and just perfect for a special occasion,” said Campora, who was responsible for giving Witherspoon the vintage-inspired mane. “Hair pulled all to one side shows off the neck and earrings, and at the same time it both opens and frames the face.”Reese-Witherspoon14

Rihanna

“These easy and sexy waves are ideal for a summer wedding or a barefoot beach wedding,” suggested the creator of Rihanna’s less-is-more style for the Grammys, Ursula Stephens. The trick here, she explained, is to wrap hair around a one-and-a-half-inch curling iron instead of inserting it in the clip, and starting the wrap a few inches down from the root “to give it an undone feel.” In order to lock in each wave before curling, Stephens suggested spraying each medium-sized section with a hairspray, such as Motions Light Hold Working Spritz. Then use a paddle brush to brush out the waves and add body before flipping your head over and shaking the entire look out with fingers. Rihanna15

Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock’s sleek, pin-straight hair is understated and edgy, while the accent of a subtle broach keeps it looking elegant and wedding-appropriate. “I see this style at a big city wedding that’s both minimalistic and modern,” said Colon. The ornament’s placement directly behind the ear is what Colon explained makes this look so new, since it’s not so obvious and is only visible when Bullock turns her head. As for how to pull off such linear locks, Colon said it’s all in the part: “The part is drawn precisely off-center, which softens the look and minimizes the severity of it is so straight.”Sandra-Bullock16

Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek proves that creativity is a virtue with a necklace that she repurposed as a headband to decorate her mussed up high bun. Hairstylist Peter Savic embellished the billowing bun at the Oscars with Cindy Chao’s Maple Leaves choker that he coiled around the base. “Hair jewelry doesn’t have to be made specifically for the hair,” he said. When trying to secure necklaces or garment broaches into looks, Savic recommended attaching wire to the ends of the jewelry and creating a loop, which gives bobby pins something to hook and latch onto.Salma-Hayek17

Stacy Keibler

“The finger waves in front and pin curls along the bottom give this look a definite retro feel,” said hairstylist Robert Vetica, who created this faux-bob Keibler wore to the Oscars. But instead of forming the pin curls on wet hair as were traditionally done in the past, Vetica crafted them on dry hair and then brushed them out, giving the look a more modern and relaxed vibe. Add a birdcage veil along the part to make your period-wedding dreams a reality.stacy-keibler18

Zoe Saldana

Also looking back on yesteryear, Roszak referenced the über-femme ’40s when molding Saldana’s hair for a recent Star Trek Into Darkness premiere. “I wanted the hair to have a bit of height much like the ’40s styles, but with a modern ‘twist,’ literally!” she explained. After fashioning a side part, Roszak rolled the front sections of hair all the way around to the nape of the neck, leaving volume at the front and adding more hair as she went along. She secured the remaining tresses into a bun with bobby pins, and then decorated the style with a Jennifer Behr headband she inserted backward so that it encircled the head from behind.zoe-saldana19

Zooey Deschanel

Roszak said Deschanel’s ample updo is extremely flattering due to the volume at both the crown and in the back. “It looks beautiful in pictures from all angles,” she said of her creation. The ticket to getting so much lift is to start with a dollop of mousse, like Pantene Flowing Body Mousse, on damp hair, before blowing it out with a boar bristle brush. After setting hair in large Velcro rollers for extra volume, remove the rollers and gently brush out the lengths. Roszak said to tease the crown with a fine-tooth comb “for a bit of a ’60s-inspired bump,” then to pull the hair back into a mid-height ponytail. Once you backcomb the base of the pony, pin the ends underneath to create a tucked chignon.Zooey-Deschanel20

Health benefits: Strange but true health tips with coffee

Nowadays people are following health tips to make their busy schedule with small changes in their diet. Many methods to improve your health are pretty straightforward: to lose weight, eat less and exercise more; to boost your energy, get more sleep; to prevent dehydration, drink more water. Others, however, are totally counterintuitive. The following tips really do work—but they may leave you scratching your head.

Drink coffee to have a better nap

In a Japanese study that examined how to make the most of a nap, people who took a “coffee nap”—consuming about 200 milligrams of caffeine i.e., the amount in one to two cups of coffee and then immediately taking a 20-minute rest—felt more alert and performed better on the computer tests than those who only took a nap.

Why does this work? A 20-minute nap ends just as the caffeine kicks in and clears the brain of a molecule called adenosine, maximizing alertness.

Dr. Allen Towfigh, medical director of New York Neurology & Sleep Medicine, said “Adenosine is a byproduct of wakefulness and activity,”. “As adenosine levels increase, we become more fatigued. Napping clears out the adenosine and, when combined with caffeine, an adenosine-blocker, further reduces its effects and amplifies the effects of the nap.”

Don’t brush after eating for healthy teeth

Don’t brush your teeth immediately after meals and drinks, especially if they were acidic. Howard R. Gamble, immediate past president of the Academy of General Dentistry said that acidic foods—citrus fruits, sports drinks, tomatoes, soda (both diet and regular)—can soften tooth enamel “like wet sandstone”.

Brushing your teeth at this stage can speed up acid’s effect on your enamel and erode the layer underneath. Gamble suggests waiting 30 to 60 minutes before brushing.

To wear a smaller size, gain weight

Muscle weight, i.e., if two women both weigh 150 pounds and only one lifts weights, the lifter will most likely fit into a smaller pant size than her sedentary counterpart. Likewise, a 150-pound woman who lifts weights could very well wear the same size as a 140-pound woman who doesn’t exercise. The reason behind this is that although a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle, muscle takes up less space, said Mark Nutting, fitness director of SACO Sport & Fitness in Saco, Maine. He said, “You can get bigger muscles and get smaller overall if you lose the fat”. “The bulk so many women fear only occurs if you don’t lose fat and develop muscle on top of it.”

To eat less, eat more

Amy Goodson, RD, dietitian for Texas Health Ben Hogan Sports Medicine, said that grabbing a 100-calorie snack pack of cookies or pretzels may seem virtuous, but it’s more likely to make you hungrier than if you ate something more substantial.

“Eating small amounts of carbohydrates does nothing but spikes your blood sugar and leaves you wanting more carbs.”

Goodson recommends choosing a protein such as peanut butter or string cheese with an apple.

“They are higher in calories per serving, but the protein, fat and help you get full faster and stay full longer—and you end up eating fewer calories overall,” she said.

Skip energy drinks when you’re tired

Goodson says that energy drinks contain up to five times more caffeine than coffee, but the boost they provide is fleeting and comes with unpleasant side effects like nervousness, irritability, and rapid heartbeat. Plus, energy drinks often contain high levels of taurine, a central nervous system stimulant, and upwards of 50 grams of sugar per can (that’s 13 teaspoons worth!). The sweet stuff spikes blood sugar temporarily, only to crash soon after, leaving you sluggish and foggy headed—and reaching for an energy drink.

Drink a hot beverage to cool off

Two recent studies say the latter—and so do others where drinking hot tea in hot weather is the norm, like in India. When you sip a hot beverage, your body senses the change in temperature and increases your sweat production. Then, as the sweat evaporates from your skin, you cool off naturally.

Healthy coffee drinking tips

Organic coffee beans

Choose organic beans, which are good for health. The healthier coffee drinking starts a day for most of the Indian people. Some of the organic foods such as equal exchange, dean’s beans and Indigo coffee roaster are best to get coffee. This is the best way to get a flavored coffee with natural organic beans, which are not artificial flavorings.

Buy whole beans and freshly grind them at home

Coffee beans begin to break down to become once the inner contents and are exposed to oxygen and moisture. The process is of naked eyes that is cut open with an apple and let’s see what happens. The white flesh starts turning brown pretty fast due to heavy exposure to oxygen and moisture. They’re also the enemies of anti-oxidants that create stability and health in living systems and ward off disease. Those anti-oxidants start to oxidize immediately after grinding that tastes fresh anymore.

Drinking coffee after a meal

This is the habit of most people who would be breakfast and drink coffee after a meal. But, it is better not to drink coffee on an empty stomach, drink it after eating some food. Caffeine causes your body to release sugar into your bloodstream that turn causes the pancreas to release insulin. This causes a sharp drop in blood sugar that can set up more sugar cravings. The caffeine in coffee suppresses your appetite causing longer without feeling hungry. This can lower blood sugar and further leads to coffee and sugar craving. The food in your stomach helps to modulate this blood sugar and response to keep those cravings at bay.

Cut down sugar in coffee

Cutting down sugar in the coffee is the most important tip for a healthier coffee drinking. I was really craving to have my coffee was the sugar more than the caffeine. But I ditched the sugar, due to palette became more attuned to various types of roasts and regional variations. Try to add cream instead of sugar in your coffee. This helps to get the sugar out once and for all. The fat in the cream will cut the bitterness of coffee. Cream is a natural sweetness that helps you wean off the refined white stuff.

One cup of coffee per day

One cup is not a starbucks, twenty plus ounce mega grande French vanilla frappuccino with whip cream and chocolate syrup. It can resemble a giant caramel coffee coolatta from Dunkin Donuts, which is eight ounces. You need to handle it with a few people who drink coffee all day long with 5, 10, 15 cups. Reduce slowly and cut it down to one cup. Reducing caffeine content includes a second brewing from the same beans that includes half decaf in each cup.

Winter beauty tips for women to take care of skin

With winter round the corner, here are some tips for you to remain beautiful. With the onset of winter in India, it is time to bring out your cold creams and warm clothes. But there is a lot more to winters than just the wool sweaters and hot soups. Taking care of one’s beauty is equally important, especially in winters. Here, you can see tips on how to get soft and smooth skin in winter season.

Beauty tips for winter skin care

For soft skin in winter season

Your skin needs more moisture in winter season. So, moisturizing is the right way after you wash. Apply some moisture to damp the skin and also helps to seal that dampness into the skin. Apply it after coming from the bath and drying your hair. You can use petroleum based ingredients that can further dry your skin in the winter. This can nourish your skin. You can choose water based solutions instead of the oil based solution. Keep some Shea butter or jojoba oil handy to keep your hands soft and smooth, especially after you have worked with water.

How to get soft and supple lips

Lips need a lot of care in the cold weather. Lysine is important to maintain soft lips. Look for lip balms that contain castor oil, olive oil and cocoa butter. Food like fish and eggs are good supplements of lysine.

This is the most common problem for people of all age groups. Chapped lips are not just a beauty crisis for women, but also irritate men and children. Lack of moisture from the lips and surrounding areas and constant licking of lips causes chapped lips in winters. Petroleum jelly, butter, pure coconut oil and lip balms are a great remedy to cure chapped lips. They should be applied many times a day as the lips start getting dry again. Olive oils and glycerin also are very effective for soft and smooth lips in winter.

Creamy cleanser for face

Face cleansers are great at removing makeup and dirt from the face, but they also rip off moisture. Gel cleansers are the best choice for oily skin to remove excessive oil from the face. However, this can leave the skin dry and rough in winters. This problem can be solved by opting for moisturizing face cleansers from brands that suit your skin type. They help to keep the face moisturized but take all the tough make-up and dirt out of skin efficiently.

Warm shower friendly

Take warm showers. Hot showers might feel very good on a cold day but they leave the skin dry and flaky. Long hours of shower as well as hot water baths can take away the essential oils and moisture from the stratum Conium, the outer layer of the skin which acts as the outer protective covering of the body. This leads to skin dryness and irritation, which sometimes causes cracks in the skin, letting harmful germs enter our body. To avoid such problems, it is advisable to switch to quick showers in lukewarm water. This minimizes the risks of dry skin. Apply moisturizers immediately after showers to retain moisture in the skin.

Moisturize your skin in winter

Moisturize your skin with a good moisturizer without fail. Apply moisturizer on your skin at least 30 minutes before you step out. Moisturizing the body is the most important thing to do in the winters. Apply moisturizing body lotions and body creams that are specially formulated for winter skin. At nights when the temperature dips further, applying glycerin to the affected areas works to retain moisture in the dry skin areas. Cold creams are available to moisturize the face as it is exposed to the cold climate all the time. These rituals should be followed several times in a day to keep dryness and skin irritation at bay.

Best diet in winter to get natural glowing skin

Eat right food that is rich in water content. This helps to hydrate your skin from inside. Eat watermelon, apples, kiwi, cantaloupe and oranges. This gives watery veggies from the celery, cucumbers, tomatoes and carrots. The foods that are good enough, such as Vitamin C and zinc that can support the healthy production of collagen and elastin. Consume foods that are rich in omega- 3 supplements, flaxseed and fatty fish, which helps to build blocks that are in need to appear supple and smooth skin.

Get rid of cracked feet with grease gel

You can try homemade tips and avoid pedicure by exfoliating and moisturizing at home. Scrub your feet with a pumice stone in the shower per week in order to slough off the rough and dead skin. Moisturize your feet, especially heels. Use a thick cream lotion that contains lactic acid that is especially effective to wear a cotton socks before going to bed. This is better and gives smooth feet by sporting socks while snoozing and helps the creams to absorb the skin. The warmer feet mean sweatier feet and also moisturizes the skin. This is more effective when applied to warm and damp skin. So, it is better to wear super toasty wool footwear that can raise the overall body temperature. This sometimes makes it difficult that can stay asleep all night long.

Drink more water for hydration

We prefer to drink less water in the winter that is because we turn the hot drinks like cocoa and tea. So, it is better to get a refreshing and hydrating skin. Drinking water helps your skin to stay young looking. Water is good for your overall health and gives the skin for someone that is severely dehydrated will benefit from fluids. The average person’s skin can reflect the amount of water.

Benefit from skin to skin contact between mothers and babies

A recent quality improvement project demonstrated that women’s birth experiences were improved by implementing skin to skin contact after cesarean surgery. Research during the past 30 years has found that there are many benefits of skin to skin contact between mother and newborns immediately after birth i.e., particularly that is by aiding breastfeeding.

Women who give birth by cesarean often have more difficulty with breastfeeding, and skin to skin contact can make breastfeeding easier by relaxing the mother and baby. It could be done in order to enhance their bond, and helping the baby to latch better. It also includes less cold stress, longer periods of sleep, improved weight gain, better brain development, a reduction in “purposeless” activity, decreased crying, longer periods of alertness, and earlier hospital discharge.

In “A Quality Improvement Project Focused on Women’s Perceptions of Skin-to-Skin Contact After Cesarean Birth,” Judith Ann Moran-Peters, RN, NE-BC, BC and her coauthors write about a QI project to implement skin to skin contact following cesarean birth and to measure women’s perceptions in contrast with previous cesarean births without immediate skin to skin contact.

“Nurses working in labor and birth settings should promote the practice of skin to skin contact between women and their newborn infants immediately following birth, given the significant health benefits associated with this experience,” write the authors. “The moment’s right after birth represents the ideal timeframe for initiating breastfeeding, which generates important health benefits for the baby.”

The authors advise that while there may be several challenges in implementing a protocol for skin to skin contact following a cesarean birth, a collaborative group of clinicians can identify and eliminate these barriers. One example is newborns not joining their mothers in a regular room until a significant amount of time has passed after birth. Additional barriers faced by women who have cesarean surgery include sterile draping from the surgery and mental fatigue from pain and sedation medications. The positive benefits of skin to skin contact for newborns and moms call for action to be taken by healthcare providers to minimize barriers and make skin to skin contact a priority.

“Nurses can help identify and eliminate barriers to skin to skin contact following cesarean surgery and raise this as a priority for improvement,” said AWHONN’s CEO, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FANN. “The health benefits of skin to skin contact along with breastfeeding are well understood, so expanding this practice to cesarean births is a natural improvement in practice and patient health.”

Acne caused due to ditch habits

Acne is a problem that is there with you throughout the year. This problem increases during the party season because you want a zit free face. Dr Sushil Tahilian, cosmetic dermatologist, Dr Abhijit Desai, who specializes in makeovers and cosmetologist Dr Rashmi Shetty, said some simple habits that could lead to acne and how to deal with it.

Choosing the wrong products

There are some products that may block the pores of your skin. That it leads to acne. Many products that are very oily and they clog pores leading to comedones and subsequently acne. So, it is more important to choose makeup or sunscreen with the label non-comedogenic.

Clear the skin while going to bed

As soon as you reach home it is very important to clear the makeup immediately, in order to prevent acne formation. You can use makeup remover first, and then cleanse your face. Wash off thoroughly and you should use a toner. Now you should slather on some rich moisturizer.

Makeup that can cause irritation

Avoid using makeups with ingredients that can cause irritation. There are certain ingredients in the makeup and sunscreen. It may cause you to break out. The ingredients present in artificial colors, fragrance, etc., can cause irritation, and result in acne. It is better to have a look before buying any product.

Over drying your face

Using harsh cleansers, alcohol based toners etc., will remove all the oil and moisture out of your face. So it’s better to avoid them as they can result in acne, drying out your skin will actually cause it to produce more oil. This phenomenon of rebound oiliness leads to acne. So, it is important to use the right medical cleansers that take away excess oil, but never make the face too dry or stretched.

Dirty laundry

Unclean towel or dirty pillow covers might be a reason for the acne on your face. Your face lies in your pillow case for hours at a time and if it’s not clean. You can see that you are rolling around in a bunch of dead skin cells and bacteria. If your towel is not clean, you could be wiped germs all over your just cleansed skin. Cosmetologist doesn’t believe this theory.

Hair products that you use

Many of the hair products can cause acne, but then often your hair touches your face. Hair products with oil, silicones, and plasticizers will clog your pores if they get onto your skin.

Choose your diet

Not only chocolates and French fries give you zits, it’s really the overall unhealthy diet that affects your skin. Some people may have allergies to certain kind of food which causes them to break out; we should be watchful about this. Most of the doctors say that there is no scientific evidence to prove chocolates or French fries give you acne.

Ever wondered about which fast food burger chain has the most locations in your neighborhood?

Fast food joints are known for spicy food. A big chain has begun nowadays. Most of the people are looking for easy going life’s. So it makes eating at out that taste spicy and tasty.

Statistical site Flowing Data has compiled a series of cool looking maps based on information from AggData to showcase how fast food chains are laid out across the country.

There were different types of burgers where people can choose for vegetarian or non-vegetarian. Most of the people will have a burger according to their choice with a soft drink too. These make them to gain fat, weight and are rich in calories.

On first glance, burger chains seem to be everywhere, but look closer and you can see there are a lot of McDonald’s (golden yellow) in the Northeast, but very few Dairy Queens (purple).

Low priced burger and others make the people more attracted towards them. It might be priced a bit higher, but you get more value for what they offer.

How to cut calories from holiday meals

Do you want to get through the holidays without taking a few extra pounds?

Kristin Porter, author of a food and recipe blog Iowa Girl Eats, says it’s not hard make healthy holiday dishes without sacrificing taste.

“It’s all about moderation, enjoy yourself, because ‘tis’ the season,’ but be mindful about what you’re eating,” said Porter.

There are tips and tricks to people looking for tasty meal ideas without adding a lot of extra fat.

As the mom of a young son, porter has been gluten free ever since giving birth. She says the main reasons people gain weight over the holidays is because they indulge without potion control.

She recommends enjoying holiday’s foods but is small servings. Be mindful of alcohol, she says, because it tends to cause people to overeat and is packed with calories. If at a party with an appetizer table, fill a plate and take it away to eat, instead of standing by the table and grazing.

Porter suggests cutting calories in recipes by making smart substitutions.

“Herbs are a great thing to add to any dish to add a lot of flavor but little to no calories,” said porter.

Butter can be swapped for applesauce and Greek yogurt can be used in baked goods instead of heavy cream, sour cream, or butter. For good health consume mashed potatoes, trade half the potatoes for steamed cauliflower. It won’t change the consistency or taste enough for picky eaters to notice and they’ll be getting veggies while indulging.

She recommends making side dishes with more veggies and less cream. Porter have some recipes like hot to make a quinoa, butternut squash and Brussels sprouts dish that is packed with flavor but not fat.

And as a way to get 2015 off to a fresh start, Porter also has a green detox smoothie for after the big meals, before or after a workout, or for a healthy breakfast.

“It’s a great way to reset after you’ve indulged, and a great way to start the New Year on a healthy note,” said Porter.

Tips on blushing bride

From face packs to hair masks, we show you how to start your wedding preparations early. And here we have some tips to become blushing over the bride.

For 29-year-old researcher Haimanti Bhattacharya, who tied the knot in February, time was the biggest hindrance to looking her best on the big day. Because of limited holidays, she couldn’t afford to devote enough time to elaborate pre-wedding beauty prep. “I had only four weeks to spare for sprucing up before the ceremony. So, I couldn’t opt for extensive sittings at the salon,” she says.

Bhattacharya instead opted for a homemade alternative to the salon package that brides-to-be usually choose.

If you’re planning to do the same for your big day, it’s best to start early and is not much expensive. Shahnaz Husain beauty expert says, “For a home-based pre-bridal routine, specialized skin care should ideally begin at least four to six weeks ahead of the wedding date.”

Coleen Khan, skin, and hair expert say, “You could begin using hot oil treatments and hair masks at home as early as six months before the wedding date. If you’re opting for treatments that can’t be done at home – like re-bonding or straightening, make sure it’s either six months prior or 20 days post your wedding. This way, it will replenish whatever damage hairstyling may have caused.”

Test it & try it

Always go for a make-up rehearsal. If you’re not taking a risk with your clothes, then why risk your make-up? There’s no room for error. So it’s better to test and try your accessories before. At least try your bridal makeup before the wedding day in order to leave tension at the time of the wedding.

Pedicure

For a quick pedicure, add some foot salts in half a bucket of hot water, and soak your feet for ten minutes. Use a heel scrubber or pumice stone to remove the dead skin on the heels. Remove your nail polish and re-paint your toes to look beautiful. Moisturize your feet with foot cream. Tie a piece of clean cloth, like a bandage not to remove cream, wear cotton socks and go to sleep. This will help soften the skin. Do this thrice a week.

Pre-wedding beauty preparation

Face mask

The egg white mask is a smelly yet effective alternative to a spa experience. It works effectively in less time.

Beat one egg white into foam and add a tablespoon of oatmeal. Mix well and make a thick paste. Add one tablespoon of honey to the paste. Apply it evenly around your face and leave it for 15 minutes. Rinse off with cold water. Repeat this twice a week. Egg white tightens your pores, oatmeal soaks up excess oil from your skin, while honey renders it soft.

Hot oil treatment

Hot oil treatment once or twice a week will improve your hair quality. Heat almond oil and apply to your hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the excess water, and wrap it around your head like a turban. Leave it on for five minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap for 3 – 4 times. This will help the hair and scalp to absorb the oil better.

Hair mask

You should give a hair treatment twice a week using simple kitchen remedies. Try the curd-egg-beer mask for a volumising hair mask. Take 2 tablespoons each of curd, honey and olive oil, 3 drops of almond oil and half a banana. Mix them well and make sure you mash it well to avoid lumps. Add half a cup of flat beer and a raw egg to the mixture. Apply evenly all over your hair and cover your hair with a shower mask.

Ubtan is a traditional homemade bridal recipe

This helps to clear the skin of dead cells, leaving it smooth and bright, with a translucent quality. Take wheat bran, gram flour, yoghurt or cream of milk and a pinch of turmeric. Mix them together and keep aside. Then massage your body with sesame seed oil. Now apply the ubtan. Leave it on for about half an hour, and wash off while bathing. Repeat this thrice a week.

Leave it for about 30 minutes and shampoo off with cold water. Then you will feel softer hair after each wash.

Winter health care guidelines

Every will wear warm clothes and stay as much as they can in their cozy homes in winter. Most of you will spend more time indoors, unfortunately, is what leads us to catching the most common seasonal disease – common cold.

Since we stay close houses with other people indoors, there are more chances to catch an infection. Like, the common cold viruses – there are more than 200 types – have a better chance of an infection during winter since the lining of our nose is drier. While there is no cure for the common cold itself. People with common cold have symptoms like coughing, sore throat, runny nose, sneezing or fever that can be treated. In the same way, the only solution to dealing with the common cold is preventing it from infecting us.

Preventing infections

Dr. Prashant Saxena, head of Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine at Saket City Hospital, suggests a few ways to do so. “Always cover your mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing, and regularly wash your hands with soap and water. The use of a disposable mask or a disposable tissue paper is a good idea if one is suffering from cold and cough. Keep your house clean and maintain a hygienic environment. People with preexisting lung problems must consult a chest specialist during the change in seasons,” he says.

According to Dr. Krishan Chugh, director and head of Paediatrics at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, there are four major points that need to be considered to prevent the seasonal respiratory diseases, especially among children.

“Avoid exposure to the illnesses at home, school, or creche and in crowded places. Second, focus on your child’s nutrition. A good, healthy, and balanced diet is the first step towards having a healthy body. Third, adequate clothing is essential to protect your child from cold temperatures. But a word of caution – please do not over clothe your child since that also can lead to problems. Last but not the least; do not use convection heaters which cause dryness of air.”

Skin problems

The cold weather also results in our skin becoming dry and flaky. According to Dr. Karuna Malhotra, a cosmetologist based in Rajouri Garden, “The onset of winter brings along its own plethora of skin problems. With cold and dry weather dictating the season, it basically becomes compulsory to moisturize our skin more meticulously.” Dr. Malhotra says that people often complain of chilblains during winter, which tends to occur especially in children and women.

“It starts with redness, with swelling and occasionally blistering of fingers and toes. Sometimes it may involve the nose and ears too. These areas might become itchy or painful with the eruptions lasting one to three weeks,” she adds.

Chilblains are the result of an abnormal reaction to the cold. When the skin is exposed to the cold, blood vessels near its surface get narrower. If the skin is then exposed to heat, the blood vessels become wider. When this happens too quickly, blood can leak into the surrounding tissue leading to chilblains.

While further conditions lead to chilblains, the constriction of the blood vessels in itself makes those of us with joint pain or arthritis more susceptible to pain. “In cold weather, to maintain the internal body temperature, the circulation of blood to the peripheral areas is less. This makes the joints less flexible and more painful. Changes in barometric pressure also worsen pain and enhance inflammation in knee joints. Restricted sunlight in winters adds further insult to injury. Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D which provides strength to the bone,” says Dr. L. Tomar, consultant, joint replacement surgeon at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Patparganj.

Better immunity

Apart from all that the individual needs to do, to prevent specific diseases and conditions, the best way to strengthen the body’s immune system in general is to have a balanced diet. “There are certain foods which definitely enhance the immune system to fight infections and brave the cold climate, says Neelanjana Singh, clinical nutritionist at PSRI Hospital at Sheikh Sarai. “These foods are the tulsi leaves, the fruit gooseberry or amla. Also, certain spices such as black pepper and turmeric also help strengthen the immune system. Besides, garlic and tea also have immune enhancing properties. It is important that we regularly consume such foods during winter season to develop and strengthen the immunity.”

Daily consumption of yoghurt can lower diabetes risk

A high intake of yogurt may be associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes suggests a new Meta analysis. A daily tablespoon of yoghurt reduces the risk of getting type 2 diabetes by nearly a fifth.

Consumption of one 28g serving of yogurt per day is associated with an 18 percent lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, the findings showed.

The research, conducted by scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health and published this month at BMC Medicine, is a cohort study, meaning that it combined data from three studies that were already very large in their own right.

“ We found that higher intake of yogurt is associated with a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes, whereas other dairy foods and consumption of total dairy did not show this association,” said senior researcher of the study Frank Hu of the Harvard School of Public Health in the US.

The findings suggest that yogurt can be incorporated into a healthy diet pattern, Hu added. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body’s cells develop resistance to insulin.

The researchers also suggest that the so-called good probiotic bacteria in yogurt may help boost that effect and provide some protection against diabetes.

Curiously, regular yogurt consumption appeared to significantly reduce the risk of diabetes, and this held true even when controlling for other dietary and lifestyle factors.

The researchers pooled the results of three prospective cohort studies that followed the medical history and lifestyle habits of health professionals. The study involved a total of 289,900 participants. Within the three cohorts, 15,156 cases of Type 2 diabetes were identified during the follow-up period.

Crunching the numbers, they discovered total dairy consumption had no link to type 2 diabetes risk, so the researchers next looked at individual dairy products, including skim milk, cheese and yogurt. They found a high consumption of yogurt went hand in hand with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

When adjusting for chronic disease risk factors such as age and BMI (body mass index) as well as dietary factors, it was found that high consumption of yogurt was associated with a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

The findings were confirmed when the authors conducted a meta-analysis, incorporating their results and other studies published up to March 2013.

The study appeared in the journal BMC Medicine.

Tips on different types of interviews

Interview preparation is the utmost thing. Researching the company and preparing answers to likely questions, be sure to ask what form the interview will take. Different formats require you to adopt a different approach.

If you’re invited to attend a video, phone, panel, or group interview. Here’s what to expect and how to impress your interviewer.

Telephonic interview

Some of the employers conduct short telephone interviews in screening candidates, while others will carry out entire interviews by phone.

Get ready: Take the call where you won’t be disturbed and minimize background noise. Switch off your computer or TV so you’re not distracted, and make sure your notes are on hand.

How to impress: “You will not be visible, so you cannot communicate anything by your appearance, gestures, or body language,” says John Lees, career coach and author of The Interview Expert. “Your voice has to do all the work, including establishing rapport. Speak with enthusiasm. If you’re nervous, take the call standing up and remember to smile – it will help you sound friendly. Most people ramble when they’re nervous, so slow down.”

To build rapport, John suggests referring to the interviewer by name from time to time and engaging in small talk if invited to at the start or end of the call. “Remember, interviewers don’t have visual clues to aid them either. If you need time to answer a question, say so. Unexpected prolonged silences can be worrying.”

Video interview

Skype is so widespread, that many recruiters are using video calls in place of telephone interviews.

Get ready: Take the call somewhere quiet where you won’t be disturbed. Make sure your Internet connection is working properly by having a practice call with a friend first. He or she can also give you feedback – are you talking too quickly, too loudly or too softly, perhaps?

Generally, the background should be simple and well lit. Dress smartly but avoid stripes or busy patterns, and keep in mind that white can be draining.

How to impress: Nonverbal clues are important in video interviews, because the recruiter is typically trying to read the candidate’s face to ensure he or she is relating to what’s being said.

“Eye contact is vital,” says Lees. “Look at the camera, not the person shown on the screen. If you forget, stick a Post-it note under the camera as a reminder. Smile, nod your head regularly, and use your hands (within reason) as you speak. Sitting upright and leaning slightly forward will show that you’re engaged.”

Group interview

Group interviews are a time saving way for employers to see candidates’ team working and soft skills in action.

Get ready to face several questions: Prepare several answers to common interview questions. That way, if you’re the fourth person asked the same question, you’ll have something new to say.

How to impress: “If you’re asked to complete a group project, recruiters want to see that you can work well with others, so make sure you demonstrate that you can collaborate. Don’t talk over others and don’t get angry if someone talks over you,” advises Corinne Mills, managing director of Personal Career Management and author of Career Coach.

“That doesn’t mean you should take a back seat or agree if you have reservations. Employers value strong candidates who can express their ideas. Be persuasive but not forceful.”

Panel interview

Usually reserved for senior roles, panel interviews are a good way for various stakeholders to be involved in the recruitment process. They also reveal how well you cope with high-pressure situations and if you fit in with the company culture.

Get ready: Find out who will be present. Then research each person via a professional networking site or the company website. Knowing who will be there will give you an indication of what questions may be asked.

“A technical expert may want to test your knowledge and awareness of developments in the sector and will ask different questions to a sales or HR manager, for example,” says Mills.

How to impress: Eye contact is vital to build rapport, but facing a row of people can be intimidating. Mills suggests that directing your answer to the person who asked the question, and then sweeping your gaze across the rest of the panel so that everyone feels included. It also allows you to read their facial expressions and assess how well your answer is received. So take care on the above mentioned points to get threw in interview.

Steps for stronger bones

Most studies show building strong bones as a teenager and young adult is the best way to dodge life threatening fractures that effect one in two women. The factors that threaten bone health, speeding mineral loss from the bones or impeding bone repair and rebuilding. The right diet can help in building your bones.
These include nutritional deficiencies, inadequate exercise, hormonal and dietary factors, drugs, and diseases of the thyroid, kidney, liver, or pancreas.

Eat properly

  • It is much better off adding a diet to get 1,000 mg of calcium a day.
  • The best food sources are low-fat dairy such as semi-skimmed milk and yoghurt, as well as bony fish, such as tinned salmon and sardines are also good for bones.
  • Dried fruits such as figs and currants and breakfast cereals and fortified with calcium are also good sources.
  • Leafy green vegetables such as kale, broccoli, and spinach are also rich in calcium.

Get more vitamin D

  • Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium. Vitamin D is found in oily fish, our main source comes from the effect of sunlight on your skin.
  • It’s estimated that half of us have a deficiency because we don’t get outside enough or because we always use sun block. As part of its Sunlight Campaign, the National Osteoporosis Society is advising people to catch some rays between May and September to keep their vitamin D levels topped up.
  • Just 10 minutes of sunlight a day on bare arms and your face can cut your risk of bone fractures by a third.

The right moves

The vital way to boost your bones is weight-bearing exercise —basically anything that has you upright and stretching your muscles. Good choices include aerobics, dancing or brisk walking.
“Research shows that if you don’t exercise you end up weeing out all the calcium you take in instead of storing it in your bones,” warns Prof Skelton. “Ideally we should aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.
“ Put simply, the more hours we spend on our feet, the fewer bone breakages we should have in later life.”

Quit the cigarettes and booze

People who smoke have significantly lower bone density, while drinking more than seven alcoholic drinks a week can prevent your bones from absorbing the maximum nutrients from your food.

Watch your stress levels

“High levels of stress make the body produce the hormone cortisol, which causes bone loss,” says Prof Skelton.
“Over a long period this can increase your risk of osteoporosis. Yoga, walking the dog or listening to music can all help bust stress.”

What is soda doing to your skin?

We all want to look good as we get older, and for the majority of people, the signs of aging are most obvious on our face. Dermatologists remind wearing sunscreen, keeping sun exposure to a minimum and avoiding smoking, but what about slowing down premature aging from the inside? Recent studies say part of the answer may be cutting out soda.

We turn around that there is another study about the negative health effects of soft drinks, and recently attention has turned to the damage it can do to your skin.

Dr. Steven Victor, dermatologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City told FoxNews.com that in more than 33 years of practice, he’s experienced the effects of soda on his patient’s skin first-hand.

Victor said, “The biggest problem about soda is the crazy amount of sugar.” “The dangers of sugar to the body are not new; scientists have been studying it for years. When a patient consumes a lot of sugar, it shows in their skin.”

The results found from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the top source of added sugar in American’s diet is beverages.

“I notice wrinkles, skin texture, oil content,” he said. “When you see somebody who is having a lot of sugar, their skin doesn’t look glowing or bright, it looks saggy and dull.”

Victor said the major problem of consuming soda is the inflammatory effect it has on the body.

“Soda is a factor in the aging process of the skin because it causes the body to produce all kinds of inflammatory products,” he said. “I compare it to Pac-Man, going around the body eating good tissue. Diet, and especially soda, greatly affects your skin.”

Many dark types of cola contain advanced glycation end products, or AGEs. A recent study from the National Institutes of Health determined that AGEs react with proteins, lipids and nucleic acids in almost all skin cells, contributing to and potentially accelerating skin aging.

In addition to sugar and AGEs, the caffeine found in soda can dehydrate the skin, emphasizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

And, soda may cause certain skin conditions to become more problematic.

“If you are drinking a lot of soda, you are starting a whole inflammatory cascade in the body, so if you have a skin condition you are exaggerating it,” Victor said. “Especially eczema or very dry, itchy inflamed skin, and acne, specifically cystic acne.”

The visible effects of soda on the skin can even be compared to those of smoking. The side effects of sugar on the skin, including dullness, dryness and the decrease in skin cell production, coincide with the effects of nicotine.

“Soda causes damage to the skin just like smoking,” Victor said. “Just like sugar, nicotine causes inflammation. Whether you are drinking or smoking chemicals, it’s hard on the body to fight them.”

The good news? Victor said it’s possible for the skin damage soda causes to be reversed.

“Cutting out sugary drinks and replacing them with water definitely produces a visible change in the health of the skin, in a very short amount of time,” he said. “If you can reduce the amount of soda you drink, you will start looking better, and your skin will look better.”

Health benefits of a carrot when you eat

Carrots are often thought of as the ultimate health food. You were probably told to “eat your carrots” by your parents and you probably tell your kids the same thing, and when asked why, you explain, “Because they’re good for you!”

Your granny wasn’t kidding when she nagged you to eat carrots for healthy eyes.

While carrots are good for your eyes, they also promote healthy skin, delay ageing, and even prevent cancer. Initially used as medicine, carrots are commonly found in orange color. But they are also available in yellow, red, white, and purple hues.

Several studies show that certain properties in carrots help reduce the risk of lung, breast, and colon cancer. Carrot is rich in poly-acetylene antioxidant which fights against cancers by destroying pre-cancerous cells in the tumors.

Carrots are excellent for the eyes and they can help to improve your night vision. This is because they are packed with beta carotene which provides you with vitamin A. beta carotene also protects against eye problems.

  • The beta-carotene in carrots is converted to vitamin A in the liver, which is then transformed in your retina, to rhodopsin — a pigment that improves night vision. Beta-carotene is also known to protect against macular degeneration and senile cataracts.
  • Carrots help slow down the ageing of cells and also work as an antioxidant.
  • Want to improve the quality of your skin? The vitamin A present in carrots protects your skin from sun damage and even prevents premature pigmentation, wrinkling, dry skin, acne and uneven skin tone.
  • You can also use boiled or mashed carrots on cuts and bruises to prevent infection.
  • Carrots are beneficial for your teeth and mouth as they scrape off plaque and food particles like a toothbrush or toothpaste.
  • Carrots contain calcium which is vital for the growth and development of bones in children and women.
  • Carrots are a good source of fiber which helps in regularizing bowel movements and aids digestion.
  • Carrots are high in carotenoids which regulate blood sugar.
  • Carrots are helpful during pregnancy as they aid in the proper development of the fetus and reduce the risk of fetal infections and miscarriage.
  • Carrots contain alkaline elements which purify and revitalize the blood as well as balance the acid alkaline ratio in the body.
  • One small cup of carrot juice in the morning taken daily for a week may help clear thread worms in children.
  • Carrot juice is diuretic and helps to eliminate excess fluids from the body, reducing water retention, especially for women during their monthly menstruation cycle and in pregnant.

The nutrients in carrots can improve the health of your eyes, skin, hair, nails and more through helping to detoxify your system and build new cells! As there are plenty of reasons to enjoy these crunchy, sweet root vegetables, so reserve a spot in your garden plot for planting some, or pop down to the local market to pick up a bunch!

Facebook introduces ‘say thanks’ in video cards to thank your friends

Facebook, the world’s largest social networking site, clearly knows how to make an occasion memorable with small things like creating “Look Back” videos back in February to celebrate its tenth anniversary.

The social networking website has today launched Say Thanks that will create a personalized video card for your friends on Facebook. All you have to do is to choose the friend you want to thank personally.

Building on a similar idea, the social networking giant introduced a new “Say Thanks” tool that helps users express gratitude to their close friends in a short video message.

Say Thanks lets you choose a theme, photos and posts to generate the video. Once you are happy with it, you can share it with a message on you and your friend’s timelines.

You can create a Say Thanks video for as many FB friends as you want, are it a family member, close friend or a co-worker.

“Millions of people use Facebook every day to connect with the people and things that matter to them most. Your friends are at the core of your Facebook experience, and we are always looking for new ways to help you celebrate those friendships,” Cameron Ewing, Design Manager and Nick Kwiatek, Engineering Manager at Facebook, wrote in the company’s blog on Wednesday. “Today we’re excited to announce Say Thanks, an experience that lets you create personalized video cards for your friends on Facebook.”

Here’s how it works

To create a Say Thanks video, you have to select a friend from the drop-down menu and voila, a video will be created and ready to share.

You could also select from four different themes and choose the photos and posts that represent your friendship.

For “old friends”, Facebook gives an option to select up to 15 photos that will be used in the video. Users can also upload new photos if the pre-selected ones are not satisfying.

Under the “friends” theme, users can select only seven photos and the video lasts for 45 seconds with a “Thank You” message. The video with “old friends” theme lasts for one minute.

Facebook will generate a preview of the video, and if you are satisfied click “Share” and the video will be posted directly to your Timeline. Your friend will be tagged in the post, so it will show up on their Timeline as well.

Say Thanks is available globally on both desktop and mobile. You can access Say Thanks at http://www.facebook.com/thanks.

Who eats the most cheese in the world?

Some of you many not aware! Which country consumes most of the world’s cheese?

Here is the answer, France. But while there are known for their fromage – loving ways, they still manage to avoid the harrowing obesity rates that plague the U.S.

The French are both mocked for the amount of cheese they eat and envied because it doesn’t seem to make them fat. Every one thinks that France has the highest consumption rate of cheese in the world because it produces the largest amount of cheese annually. More than 1000 varieties are produced in a fiscal year within the French country. But in fact from usage point of view, Germany is the largest cheese consumer in the world as compared to the other countries of the world. Different countries have different consumption rates.

According to a new report from the International Dairy Federation, Europeans consume a staggering amount of cheese. The top ten cheese eating countries are all in Europe, with each person putting away at least 43 pounds of cheese per year. The average French person consumes 57 pounds.

The report also highlighted a new trend in other global markets. While the Chinese ate less than 0.074 pounds of cheese per person in 2013, Chinese cheese imports increased 22 percent from the previous year, reported by the Wall Street Journal. The trend may be due in part to the rising popularity of cheesy fast foods like pizza across Asian markets.

“The global cheese market is characterized by the fact that several of the leading producing and exporting countries are also among the largest cheese importers”, the IDF said.

Cheese is good for your health. It is widely used food which is derived from the milk and it is available in diverse flavors and textures. Consume more cheese than the rest of world as it has a wide range of proteins and fats naturally included in composition which are beneficial for the human health. Its good and huge production requires a reasonable time effort and education.

Tips on clothing care skills Millennials probably don’t know

New research shows that tons of wasted textiles might be saved by a few simple, basic skills. Many people don’t know how to take care of clothing which makes them look long for more time.

What was once common knowledge is no more—since the decline of home economics; it seems that millennials are ill equipped to handle some of the most basic tasks, such as caring for their clothing.

Research published in Family and Consumers Sciences Research Journal by Pamela Norum.

Pamela Norum, a professor in the Department of Textile and Apparel Management in the University of Missouri College of Human Environmental Sciences, studied more than 500 female baby boomers and millennials (between ages 18 and 33) regarding clothing care. She found that four major areas took a hit in the younger generation: sewing, hemming, button repair, and general laundry knowledge.

While it’s unsurprising that baby boomers are more knowledgeable when it comes to clothing repair, Norum is concerned that carelessness might be contributing to the 14.3 million tons of textile waste that Americans create every year.

She suggests that since these skills are no longer taught in schools, they should be learned at home, or even through fashion blogs and Pinterest tutorials. It is better to invent a session in schools for crafting.

Here, a breakdown of the basics everyone needs to know, and the resources to learn them.

Sewing and Hemming

People who learned how to hand sew rated their repair skills almost three points higher than those who had never learned the skill.

  • You should learn from knowing that how to thread a needle
  • You need between 18 and 24 inches of thread
  • You should know how to fix a fallen hem

Everyone can benefit from a basic sewing skill set. You’ll save money on professional repair you can easily do yourself.

Button Repair

Buttons are almost guaranteed to fall off a garment—stores wouldn’t attach spares just for fun! A shirt or coat is often no good without this fastener, so make sure to pick up this essential skill. We have a simple three-step guide to reference at any time. You should learn how to sew buttons on jackets.

General Laundry Knowledge

This all-encompassing skill covers the confidence to wash all different types of clothes—and you might still make some mistakes while washing clothes. Washing your brand new jeans with your delicates can, as we’ve learned the hard way, lead to bleeding and serious damage.

Laundry isn’t just about putting the clothes in the machine—you need to know how much detergent to use, which water setting is best, and how to separate each load by color and fabric. Even something as simple as unbuttoning a shirt before washing can prevent buttons from tearing. If Feeling ambitious? You could tackle ironing, too.

The perfect breast looks like according to men and women

Every woman worries about what her breasts look like; this is especially after childbirth or wear and tear as the years go by.

If you have ever wondered what the perfect breasts look like, you don’t have to wonder anymore as scientists have finally found what the perfect breasts should look like.

It may sound like a headline from The Onion, but actual British researchers have pinpointed the ideal breast shape, according to a study published in the very real journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

British researchers have pinpointed the ideal breast shape, according to a study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

British doctors surveyed 1,315 people (men, women and plastic surgeons), asking them to look at photos of different breasts and pick the proportions they liked best.

The wining ratio across all three groups: 45:55, as in 45% of breast tissue falls above the nipple line and 55% below. Turns out, this is a “natural” shape—similar to the Venus de Milo—and nothing like the orb-like, fake boobs of yours.

“Particularly in the United States in previous decades, plastic surgeons have used implants that were often round due to being filled with saline,” wrote researchers Dr. Patrick Mallucci of The Cadogan Clinic and Dr. Olivier Branford of the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust in an email. “These inevitably gave an unnatural football-like or ‘Baywatch’ breast with overfilling of the top of the breast due to the implant shape and lack of understanding as to what to aim for.”

Surprisingly, one subset in the study was more apt to choose perfect, even melons: women over 40. The likely reason? They pine for what they’ve lost up top. “As the breast ages,” wrote the researchers, “it becomes fatter, the skin sags and the nipple fall, often with breast volume loss.” (As if those of us in our 40’s need a reminder of all that!)

Maybe you’re thinking: How dare experts reveal what’s “perfect” when we all know beautiful breasts come in all shapes and sizes! Well, before you get too worked up, keep in mind that the study was meant to help plastic surgeons have a more consistent template not only for breast augmentation, but also breast reductions and reconstruction after cancer.

Top line takeaway? A natural bosom is the favorite, even with guys—no matter what beer commercials would have us believe. As the British doctors explained, “Preconceptions that man prefers an artificial augmented look are false.”

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes so don’t get too worried to comparing your breasts to this perfect ideal. The study was meant to help plastic surgeons have a more consistent template not only for breast augmentation, but also breast reductions and reconstruction after cancer.

Fat-busters for your problem from saddle bags to bingo wings

COSMETIC expert Dr Dennis Wolf reveals his top fat-burning formulas to reduce the five most problematic areas of the body.

Here Dr Dennis Wolf, Cosmetic Doctor at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, gives us the low down on the formation of fat in five of our biggest problem areas and how we can lose it.

Bingo wings

Certain areas of the body are predisposed to store fat and, for many women, the upper arm is one of these areas. ‘Bingo wings’ commonly develop in women with age, or through a lack of exercise. This results in skin loosening its elasticity and fat starts to accumulate, creating that unwanted ‘saggy’ appearance.

Unfortunately this is one area of the body where fat is particularly difficult to target. It can, however, be tackled through targeted exercise or via a cosmetic procedure such as Vaser liposuction, which can remove the small pockets of fat in the arm and shape around the muscle to create a more toned, defined appearance.

Love Handles

One of the reasons that fat gathers on the flanks or ‘love handles’, is that you might be consuming too much sugar. A thick middle is often a sign that your body isn’t handling insulin very well, which often results in fatty deposits around the waist.

Significantly cutting down your sugar consumption could certainly have a positive impact on this area of the body. Eating less sugar goes hand in hand with a healthy diet, so try to make sure you’re eating the correct foods, as well as exercising regularly. This will go a long way towards reducing those stubborn pockets of fat.

Belly flab

Men and women are programmed to store fat in different ways. This is a legacy of our hunter gatherer days when women were responsible for looking after and feeding the children. As a result of this role women had to ensure they were well-nourished so they could provide sustenance for their offspring whilst also surviving regular famine and extremely cold winters.

When men gain weight, it tends to go straight to their upper body, which is often the reason why they form a ‘beer belly’. This visceral fat is unhealthy and very difficult to get rid of.  Women, on the other hand, are programmed to store fat largely on the hips, bum and legs, it is also common for women to develop excess fat on their tummy.

Reduce your consumption of foods which are high in saturated fat. Alcohol can also play a big part here, so try to reduce your alcohol intake and you may slowly see that belly disappear! It’s also important to take on regular cardiovascular exercise that will bring your heart rate up, gradually burn off unwanted fat and keep your tummy toned.

Buttocks

Many women suffer from what’s often termed ‘the banana roll’. The Banana roll is the term used for the pocket of fat, located at the top of the thighs, just beneath the buttocks. This is a very common location for fat to gather and often the heavier the bottom is, the larger the banana roll will become because of the weight above it.

Another common concern for women is the formation of cellulite on the buttocks and the top of the thighs. Cellulite is caused by fat being trapped between the connective tissue, which links the muscles to the skin resulting in the loss of support structures.

There are ways to reduce the appearance of cellulite, including quitting smoking, reducing your consumption of foods which are very high in salt and ensuring you include plenty of vitamin C in your diet, which boosts levels of collagen in the skin.

Double chin

The dreaded double chin is something which plagues both men and women. This problem area is often a matter of genetics, as well as age. If you’re parents or grandparents did, but it’s also likely that, as you grow older, this area of concern will become more evident. With age, your skin loosens and you lose muscle tone, which often causes this area of the body to droop or to appear ‘wobbly’. Our neck muscles also tend to strand which can give us the “turkey neck” appearance.

Burning excess fat will have an impact on many different areas of the body and the double chin is one of those.  Losing one percent of body mass may not have a large impact on your tummy, but a massive effect on your chin. Eating the right foods is also incredibly important; avoid processed foods that are high in sugar. It may also be that a skin tightening treatment or a non-surgical facelift may be an option worth considering as you grow older, if this remains an area of real concern for you.

Winter beauty tips for women

Beat the winter blahs: Learn how to soothe dry skin, prevent static hair, and pamper yourself just when you really need to.

With winter round the corner, here are some tips for you to remain beautiful.

It is time to bring out your cold creams and warm clothes with the onset of winters in India. But there is a lot more to winters than just the wool sweaters and hot soups.

Not only is the weather outside frightful, as the holiday song goes, but it can also make you look frightful. Between the icy dry air and wind outdoors and the hot dry air indoors, you may be contending with flaky skin, chapped lips, parched locks, raw hands and more.

Taking care of one’s beauty is equally important, especially in winters.

Soft skin: Keep some shea butter or jojoba oil handy to keep your hands soft and smooth, especially after you have worked with water.

Caffeinated beverages: Coffee and non-herbal teas contain caffeine, a natural diuretic, which can dry out your skin. Choose herbal teas or plain water to keep as hydrated as possible (without going overboard) and your skin will improve.
Beautiful lips: Lips need a lot of care in the cold weather. Lysine is important to maintain soft lips. Look for lip balms that contain castor oil, olive oil and cocoa butter. Food like fish and eggs are good supplements of lysine.

Healthy skin: The only dryness you experience is the kind that sneaks up on your elbows and heels. It’s because it contains enough natural oils. But there’s another reason for your skin to maintain a strong, protective barrier that keeps moisture in and irritants out. This barrier is composed of skin cells, which are surrounded by fats called lipids. Everyone’s skin has a protective layer, but yours is in better shape than most.

Healthy locks: Nourish your hair with hot oil on a regular basis to prevent them from getting dry. Coconut oil is the best for the weather conditions here.
Shower friendly: Take warm showers. Hot showers might feel very good on a cold day but they leave the skin dry and flaky.

Cracked reptilian skin: Too many hot showers and not enough body cream can make your skin resemble desert creatures. Arms and legs have fewer oil glands, so they tend to be drier and scalier than other parts, especially in the winter.

Moisturize: Moisturize your skin with a good moisturizer without fail. Apply moisturizer on your skin at least 30 minutes before you step out.

Drink more water: The key to hydrated skin comes from the inside out. In warm weather, most of us think to drink more fresh water, since we may be perspiring, even when we aren’t working out. But since winter air is especially dry, it’s important to drink plenty of age during the winter too.

“Water should be consumed at room temperature or warmer,” Arnett recommends, “and if you realize that you are quire dehydrated, add a small pinch of mineral salt to the water, which will help your body absorb it more effectively.”

Smoking ups risk of developing a second cancer

Cigarette smoking is a well established risk factor for primary cancer. Smoking is known to significantly increase a person’s risk of developing lung and kidney cancer. New study shown that people who smoked prior to their first cancer diagnosis are also much more likely to go on to develop a second smoking associated cancer.

A large study has found that cigarette smoking prior to the first diagnosis of lung (stage I), bladder, kidney or head and neck cancer increase the risk of developing a second smoking-associated cancer.

US researchers examined data from five major studies involving over 15,000 people with lung, head and neck, bladder and kidney cancer. They focused on the development of second primary cancers.

The first time a person is diagnosed with cancer, it is referred to as a first primary cancer. A second primary cancer is a second cancer that has been diagnosed that is not considered metastases, but is in face a distinct, new cancer.

The researchers found that people who smoked at least 20 cigarettes per day prior to their first diagnosis of cancer had a five-fold increased risk of going on to develop a second smoking associated cancer, compared to people who had survived the same cancers but had never smoked.

“As survival improves for a number of smoking-related cancers, patients are living longer; however, smoking may increase the risk of developing a second smoking-related cancer among these survivors,” said Meredith S. Shiels, lead study author and research fellow with the National Cancer Institute’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics.

Notably, current smoking at any level increased the risk of overall mortality across all cancer disease sites.

“Our study demonstrates that health care providers should emphasize the importance of smoking cessation to all their patients, including cancer survivors,” Shiels concluded.

Almost 900 second primary smoking associated cancers were diagnosed among the participants. Across the four different cancers assessed those who smoked at least 20 cigarettes per day before their first cancer diagnosis were more likely to develop a second smoking associated cancer.

Researchers examined data from five cohorts which included 2,552 patients with stage I lung, 6,386 with bladder, 3,179 with kidney and 2,967 with head and neck cancer.

The risks were as follows to cancer.

  • With head and neck cancer, they were 4.5 times more likely
  • With stage one lung cancer, smokers were 3.3 times more likely to develop a second smoking-associated cancer.
  • With bladder cancer, they were 3.7 times more likely.
  • With kidney cancer, they were 5.3 times more likely.

The study also found that people, who smoked fewer than 20 cigarettes per day, and former smokers, also had an increased risk of developing a second smoking associated cancer compared to never smokers; however the risks fell in line with the number of years since they had quit the habit.

Tips to stop sugar craving

Like any other habit, turning to sugar can be a tough one to kick. Totally shunning sweet delights can sometimes increase your temptation towards sweets. It seems like the more sweets and desserts you have, the more you are waiting for the next hit.  So, instead of running away from satiating your sugar craving, try to curb it once in a while, suggest experts.

Here’s what they have to say: There isn’t a single cure-all to this problem, but in general, the less sweets you eat, the less you’ll crave them.

Denial is not the answer: Denying you sweet foods completely is likely to result in sugar cravings and encourage bingeing. A little of the sweet stuff is fine in moderation and a small serving of your favorite pudding will help satisfy a sweet tooth. Have with a meal to reduce the effect on blood sugar levels.

Get enough sleep: According to Martin Budd, naturopath and author of “Why Am I So Exhausted”, when we are tired, we often use sugar. So make sure you actually do build in proper sleep.

Get spicy: You could also try flavoring food and drinks with vanilla or spices such as nutmeg or cinnamon and cardamom.

Keep moving: Often our little sugar treats especially after a meal is often more a habit or a way of dealing with emotional issues. Before you take a bite, stop and think about why you are doing this and work through that emotion.

Try a detox: Max Tuck, author of book “Whole Body Solutions”, says that introducing lots of greens into the diet, raw and preferably juiced with vegetables such as celery and cucumber, are not only detoxing but help to regulate blood sugar by providing protein, and also minerals that are responsible for maintenance of blood sugar levels. Likewise, the green leaves provide an excellent source of magnesium, the “stress mineral” that many people are deficient in. Juicing greens provides whole-body benefits.

Take care of nutrient deficiencies: Nutrient deficiencies can make cravings worse and the fewer nutrient deficiencies, the fewer cravings. Certain nutrients seem to improve blood sugar control including chromium, vitamin B3 and magnesium.

Clean out the cupboards and refrigerator of unhealthy foods and tempting treats. Make it a team effort. Hold each other accountable and support one another through the tough times. As hard as it might be to believe, you CAN quit the sugar habit. Not only will you probably lose some weight, but you will feel better and more energetic.
