Skin problems you face in winter season

It becomes very difficult for us to carry out a daily routine or enjoy an outing during winters as our skin just doesn’t seem to cooperate due to the harsh weather conditions. Winter is a moisture thief. Cold winter air has extraordinarily low moisture content, to the point where it steals moisture from the skin. Let it be any type of wind, the molecules of water in your skin are stolen even faster. So here are the problems we face during this season and their solutions.

Irritated and red skin

Your skin will easily become irritated throughout the cold weather season, so you have to change your skin care routine by using a more gentle cleanser and a heavier moisturizer to soothe the skin on your face as your skin needs more moisture to stay soft and supple.

Wind burns and sunburns can still occur

Always remember to apply sunscreen as it is not reserved to be used only in the summer season. Even if it’s a cloudy day, you can still get a burn – especially if it’s super windy outside. Make sure you use a lip balm with SPF in it just for these circumstances.

Bone dry body

If you see that your legs seem reptile-like, stock up on moisturizer as it will avoid your skin to hurt. You can also use an extra moisturizing body wash. Remember to apply your lotion right after you step out of the shower in order to lock the moisture of your skin.

All over itchiness

There are a few causes of winter itching, which is normally caused due to the drop in temperatures, but if you notice that your dry skin is leading you to scratch, make sure you’re not spending too much time under the hot shower as this will just dry out your skin even more. Also, take note of the clothes you’re wearing, as wools will irritate your sensitive skin and soft cottons and silks will be more comfortable.

Continual dryness, even though you’ve moisturized

If your skin is constantly dry even though you’ve moisturized, make sure you’re staying hydrated. The dry, cool air will obviously dry out your skin and extracts the moisture from inside out. So keep yourself hydrated by drinking sufficient water.

If you really want to get through winter with silky-smooth skin, then you need to take some preventive measures well in advance. Switch to a moisturizing soap, and use less of it on arms and legs as they don’t need as much soap as other body parts. Start applying cream everywhere twice a day especially on your lower legs, lower back and arms. Also avoid scented body wash as it is too drying, instead go for fragrance-free moisturizing bars.

If you still feel you need few more preventive measures to take care of your skin then you can try few homemade remedies.

Avocado mask

This super food is full of good fats, and its oil is very similar to the oil we generate on our skin. When our skin is unbearably dry, this mask is a great option to regain that dewy complexion you’re craving while avoiding those heavy moisturizers that can clog pores.

Take half of a ripe avocado, skinned and mashed, 2 tbsp dry oatmeal, ½ orange, or 1 egg white. Mix all these ingredients to form a paste. Wash your face with warm water, so that your skin absorbs the oils quicker. Apply the paste on your face, and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. Rinse your face with warm water, and pat your face try with a clean towel.

Banana mask

Bananas are rich in antioxidants and vitamin c, which will work together to brighten your skin and target the toxins. The yogurt helps to calm the redness and tighten your pores, locking out the grimy dirt, oil, and dry skin that can clog your pores. The honey is just to add bonus that will destroy any lingering bacteria.

This facemask is a soothing option for wind-burned, red skin that you can’t handle. Take 1/2 a ripe banana, 1/2 cup of plain yogurt and 1 tsp honey. Smash the banana and mix in the honey and yogurt thoroughly until the ingredients form a paste. After washing your face with warm water, leave on this nourishing mask for 10 minutes, and then rinse with cold water to seal your pores.

Skin problems you face in the summer

It feels really good to move around in a sandy beach, go camping in the wilds, or even simply relax in our backyard during summers. But this de-stressing therapy of getting back to nature takes a toll on our skin, causing skin rashes, pigmentation, greasiness, redness etc. Let’s explore the different skin problems we face during the summer season and the measures to tackle them.

Sun tan and sun burns

The skin gets more exposure to the harsh UV rays of the sun during summer and leads to redness and inflammation. So always cover up yourself with wide brimmed hats or lightweight, breathable scarves, even when the weather is cloudy. You can also throw on a shrug to protect your arms. Avoid being outside during 10 am to 4 pm. Opt for a waterproof sunscreen lotion with at least SPF 30 or more. The trick is to apply it every 2 hours. For relief from painful and inflamed skin, you need to cool yourself down by using a shower or an oatmeal bath. To treat redness mix around 25-30 drops of essential oil (lavender) with almond oil (100 ml) and apply on the affected skin.

Mosquito bites

Summer season is basically a mosquito season and they are everywhere, especially outdoors. Not only mosquitoes cause unsightly and itchy red spots on our skin, they are also carriers of diseases. So choose a safe insect repellent. Remove any stagnant water in and around your residence. The pain and itching caused due to mosquito bite can be managed with topical application of ice on the bitten area. Essential oil, such as lavender can be applied on the bite. Use only 2 drops of undiluted oil for instant relief.

Prickly heat

Perspiration moistens the skin. The moist skin is an easy target for dirt and other impurities to accumulate. They block the pores and lead to summer rashes and acne giving an appearance of small pimples. In order to avoid this condition, wear loose and comfortable cotton clothes that allow the skin to breathe and absorb away the sweat. Avoid using heavy lotions that block the pores. Try and reduce the sun exposure during the peak times of 10 am to 4 pm. Use talcum powder to soak up the sweat. Cleanse your skin without fail at regular intervals.

Dry and parched skin

The intense heat and exposure to sun and our need for air conditioning makes our skin dry. The lesser water intake makes the skin tight and parched. Hence hydrate the skin by drinking at least 8 glasses of water every day. Moisturize your skin with a lightweight, water-resistant lotion, and sunscreen. If you have dry hands and feet, apply a night cream and opt for cotton socks and gloves to seal in the moisture. You can even opt for a natural oil massage along with some essential oils. Choose a carrier oil like almond oil (100 ml) and add up to 2 drops of geranium and 5 drops of lavender essential oil.

Back acne

Pimples can pop up in all sorts of places, even on your back. Acne occurs in areas with high concentrations of sebaceous glands, and they’re most common on the face, chest and back. So if you observe that you’re getting more blemishes on your back and shoulders in the summer, it is the cause of the high temperatures in this season. Even when you wear clothing that is tight to the body, it leads to pimples or heat, rashes, which are often mistaken for back acne. Firstly, to reduce red spots is to visit your doctor for a diagnosis. If you have true back acne, your physician may recommend a medication, to help clear up the condition. Secondly, wear clothes which are, breathable, gentle on your skin and absorb the sweat in summer without causing any kind of irritation to your skin.

Greasy, shiny skin

The increased sweating due to heat and sun exposure can cause greater oil production on the skin’s surface, especially the t-zone which leads to skin becoming greasy or shiny. To combat a shiny complexion, wash your face two to three times a day with a mild cleanser that is free of perfumes and harsh additives.

Face scrubs for your skin at home

Exfoliation or scrubbing is an important part of every skin care regime. A homemade facial scrub can make your skin look younger, shinier, and more radiant. It will take off the dead skin cells to make way for new fresh ones. And most importantly, it’s natural without any harmful unnatural chemicals or vague ingredients. Gradually people are re-discovering the powers of homemade facial scrubs, as the ingredients used in these are truly natural. These scrubs can be simply made out of the ingredients from your kitchen cabinet and are freshly prepared and cost effective.

Custom a facial scrub according to your skin type

There are tons of facial scrubs available out there in the market, but it becomes challenging to find exactly the right scrub for your skin type.

  • Firstly, choose your exfoliate. You can choose either plain white sugar or brown sugar or iodized table salt or black lava sea salt. Sugar is less abrasive than salt as it dissolves more easily. Brown sugar is best for sensitive skin, because of its texture. Salt exfoliates well and can help remove impurities and dead skin. And the black lava sea salt also removes dead skin along with helping increase cell activity. Exfoliating facial scrubs can be used on all skin types. However, avoid using these scrubs on acne, broken capillaries, sensitive skin, and thin skin. Also avoid: irritated, sunburned, windburned, and injured skin.
  • The next ingredient you select is your oil. We can choose among five different oils that are great for your skin—olive oil, sunflower oil, almond oil, avocado oil, and extra virgin coconut oil. All of these oils, except the avocado oil, are naturally antibacterial, which will help prevent any skin problems. Olive oil is good for really dry skin, and it won’t clog your pores. Sunflower oil is fatty oil that can help calm irritated skin and prevent clogged pores. Almond oil is fantastic because it can reduce the effects of UVB rays, and it can help improve skin tone. Avocado oil is actually extracted from the pulp of the fruit—not the seed—so it’s incredibly rich and will help your skin retain moisture. Finally, extra virgin coconut oil is packed with antioxidants and free radicals which help prevent aging.
  • You could actually make a scrub with just an exfoliate and oil, however adding in one of these five fruits and vegetables gives your skin better results. However, adding in a fresh fruit will reduce the shelf life of your scrub, so you’ll have to store it in the refrigerator. Kiwis help brighten your complexion, and the seeds in the fruit pulp can act as mini exfoliates on their own. Strawberries are best for evening your skin tone and adding brightness to your skin, they are also rich in vitamin C. Pineapple is best for acne prone skin, it has an enzyme that helps dissolve dead skin cells. Tomato contains lycopene which can help protect skin from UV rays. And finally cucumber can help reduce puffiness by reducing water retention.

So there you go with all the guidelines to prepare your personalized facial scrub by whipping together an exfoliate, oil, and fruit of your choice and texturing it into a scrub consistency. Now you are good to go ahead and exfoliate your skin.

Without immediate care, dry skin can lead to cracking and bleeding, and harsh winter wind makes the problem worse. Prevent dry skin with simple daily steps like using moisturizers and wearing sun protection. Indoor heat further robs the air of moisture, as do hot showers or baths and harsh cleansers.

Skin types and how to take off skin based on its type?

The skin is a living organ, prone to environmental changes and in a constant state of change and regeneration, it is possible that you may go through phases of different skin types. It is absolutely necessary to know your skin type and make a right decision about a proper skin care which is suitable for your particular skin needs.

The health and beauty of your skin largely depend on what you eat and how you take care of yourself. Some people also have a combination of skin types in different areas of their skin.

How to determine your skin type?

You can use a simple test with a clean facial tissue to wipe your face in the morning. Otherwise caring for the wrong skin type can aggravate skin, lead to acne or even make your skin look older than it really.

Skin types differ depending upon three factors such as water content which affects your skin’s comfort and elasticity, oil content which affects your skin’s softness and sensitivity level.

Normal skin

The tissue will not reveal any traces of oil if your skin belongs to a normal type. Your skin should feel vibrant, elastic, and supple. Your skin is smooth and radiant because it reflects light evenly. Normal skin is the least problematic type. It looks clean and smooth and has a good circulation and healthy complexion. Your complexion is balanced, and you rarely have breakouts. Even with a minimum care, it will look good well into your advanced age.

Dry skin

The paper will be clean, too, but your facial skin will feel flaky, dry and tight after you have wiped it that if you have dry skin. Dry skin lacks natural lipids, or oils, making it prone to dehydration due to lack of water.

Dry skin can be easily developed a sallow tone, wrinkles, and fine pores, and it is very prone to aging and irritating. Dry skin, also needs both oil and water to balance it out. It might still look great for a young person, but, to keep it healthy, you should apply thorough care and use regular skin or beauty treatment with natural masks and moisturizers.

Oily skin

The paper will have spots of facial oil on it, corresponding to the areas of your cheeks, nose, and forehead. Your face feels and looks moist and shiny. Oily skin is problematic – it usually looks greasy, thick, coarse and shiny has enlarged pores and tends to break into acne. You tend to clog pores and your skin is prone to both non-inflammatory acne and inflammatory acne which pop up all over.

A good thing, though, is that oily skin is not prone much to aging and wrinkling. Careful cleaning, minimizing of carbohydrate consumption, and avoiding rich creams can be helpful in improving the quality of oily skin.

Combination skin

The tissue will have traces of oil coming from your nose and forehead, but will be clean in the areas that touched your cheeks, if your skin is combination type. Your forehead, nose, and shin are oily and tend to break out, while your temples, eye area, and cheeks are really dry. Combination skin has patches of both dry and oily skin and it requires different types of care in relation to particular facial areas. Therefore skin changes according to the climate or season, sometimes it’s completely oily, other times its sandpaper dry.

Dry zones are usually located on the cheeks and around the eyes, should be treated with rich creams and moisturizers, while oily areas, usually on the forehead and nose, will benefit from frequent and thorough cleaning.

Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is usually very dry, tends to feel tight, and becomes inflamed and irritated. Sensitive skin is prone to damage from environmental factors. All skin needs exfoliation to remove built up dead skin, but this needs to be done gently. Sensitive skin develops reddish and scaly areas, can be itchy and tingly, and is prone to breaking into spots. Facials that use enzymes to exfoliate work very well, because they don’t irritate the skin. It is the most problematic and fragile type of skin, which needs a very special type of care.
