Dandruff is a common condition of the scalp. It is not a dangerous or contagious condition, but it is surely embarrassing and sometimes difficult to treat. There are ways and means to control it. Sometimes dandruff is a result of some hair products like hair oil, hair dyes. These products develop a red itchy scalp.  Frequent use of hair styling tools and shampooing very often can cause dandruff. Sometimes improper nutrition, stress, lack of sleep, hormonal imbalance and poor health can also result into dandruff.

Causes of dandruff

The most common cause of dandruff is dryness of the skin. Flakes on the dry skin are less oily and smaller in size. But when the flakes turn yellowish greasy the skin becomes red and itchy it becomes a condition of dandruff. Lack of shampooing can lead to building up of skill cells on the scalp which can cause dandruff. Other causes of dandruff include certain skin conditions like eczema which is an inflammatory condition of the skin and psoriasis which is a build-up of dry skin cells that form scales like dandruff. The scalp of most adults is inhabited by yeast like fungus called Malassezia. In some people this yeast like fungus becomes irritable and enables more skin cells to grow. These extra skin cells fall off in the form of dandruff.

Dandruff is   the flakes that fall from the hair which are greasy and yellowish white in colour.  There is an odour in the scalp and the person experiences continuous itching.

Sunlight is good to reducedandruff but too much exposure to sun’s ultra violet rays can damage the skin.

Yogurt or curd packs for dry and dandruff scalp

Curd has acidic quality that helps to combat with dandruff and conditions to give a shiny and soft texture to your hair. Take a small amount of white sour curd or yogurt. Leave it open for a day or two in order to fermentation. Whisk the curd and apply it on the scalp and hair. Leave it for an hour and rinse it off with a mild shampoo. This helps to get rid of dandruff free scalp.

Henna to control dandruff

Henna or mehndi leaves are best natural hair conditioning ingredients. These are used for centuries to treat all hair problems. Take henna and mix it in tea liquor. Add curd into a glass bowl. Add lemon juice into that mixture. Mix them well and leave it aside for about 8 – 10 hours. Apply it on hair and scalp in the form of hair pack. Leve it for about 1- 2 hours and rinse it off with water. Gently wash them with a mild shampoo. Repeat the process once a week for better results.

Indian Lilac for dandruff control

Indian Lilac which is known as neem in India is very helpful in the treatment of dandruff. It is also helpful forother hair problems like acne and itchy scalp as it contains anti-fungal and anti- bacterial properties.  Boil a cup of neem leaves in four cups of water. Strain and cool the decoction. Use it to rinse the hair after a hair wash two to three times a week.

Coconut oil to prevent dry scalp

Coconut oil is the perfect solution to give relief from itching caused by dandruff and in moisturizing the dry scalp. Mix some lemon juice in coconut oil and massage the head properly with it. Leave it for 20 minutes and then wash the hair with a mild shampoo.

Apple cider vinegar to treat dandruff

Apple cider vinegar is found to be effective in getting rid of dandruff from the scalp. It helps in balancing the pH factor of the scalp and controls the growth of yeast. It is a perfect cleanser that cleans the clogged pores and follicles. Mix equal amount s of water and apple cider vinegar and add a few drops of tea tree oil in it. Apply it on the hair and scalp and rinse after 10 minutes.

Aspirin for dry and dandruff scalp

The salicylic acid in aspirin helps to   reduce dandruff by cleansing the scalp.  Crush two tablets of aspirin and mix it with a small amount of shampoo. Rub this mixture on the scalp and then wash it after some time. Aspirin can also be used by mixing the crushed aspirin powder with vinegar. Massage it on the hair and scalp and leave it for 30 minutes before washing.

Fenugreek seeds to get rid of dandruff

This can be effectively used to control dandruff.  A paste must be made with fenugreek seeds that are soaked overnight in water and ground in the morning. Add some yogurt to this pate and apply it on the scalp. Leave it for a couple of hours and then shampoo the hair with a mild shampoo.

Baking soda to prevent dandruff

Baking soda has the property to get rid of dead skin cells and absorb excess oil from the scalp. It is very helpful in maintaining the balance of the pH levels of the skin and reducing the reasons for fungal infection.  Simply wet the hair and rub baking soda in the scalp. Leave it for a few minutes and then wash the hair with warm water but do not use shampoo.

White vinegar for dandruff scalp

White vinegar is found to be one of the proven home treatments for dandruff.  The ascetic acid content of vinegar controls the growth of fungi and gives relief from itching. Mix vinegar with water and give the final rinse to the hair after shampooing. Alternatively it can be mixed with olive oil and water and massaged into the scalp. Leave it for 10 minutes and then wash the hair using a mild shampoo.

Olive oil to treat dry scalp

Olive oil is a natural moisturizer that helps to get rid of scalp dryness. Massage heated extra virgin oil into the head.  Wrap the head with a warm towel and leave it covered for about 45 minutes or better if kept overnight.  Shampoo the hair in the morning.

Tea tree oil for hair care

Tea tree oil is found to be good cure for dandruff as it contains strong anti-fungal properties. Just add a few drops of tea tree oil in the normal shampoo and shampoo the hair. This oil can be substituted with coconut oil or olive oil. Leave the oil in the hair overnight or for a minimum of half an hour and then shampoo it with a mild shampoo.

Lemon juice to get rid of dandruff

The acids in lemon help to control the growth of fungi which is the basic cause of dandruff. Mix lemon juice and yogurt and apply it on the scalp. Leave it for 20 minutes and then rinse and shampoo the hair. Another option is to mix lemon juice and water and rub it on the scalp.  Wash and rinse the hair after five minutes.
