Headaches are extremely common due to work stress, family demands, and skimpy sleep. Headaches can be classified into three main categories like tension, migraine, cluster headaches. There are many causes such as physiological changes, constriction of blood vessels, abnormal neuronal activity, genetic causes, dehydration, oversleeping, eye strain, and neck strain.

Tension headaches are the most common type of headaches. Migraine attacks with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to lights and sounds. The cluster is that occur for weeks to months at a time by periods of remission.

Home remedies for headaches

Caraway seeds

Take some roasted caraway seeds that are dry. Then tie them in a soft handkerchief or a clean cloth. Sniff it hardly to get a relief from headaches.


Take a fresh apple and chop it into pieces. Sprinkle some salt on the pieces and eat them in the morning for at least a week. It helps to cure chronic headaches.


Ginger has anti-inflammatory property that can be used to treat headaches. Add tea leaves and ginger to 1 cup of boiling water. Stir them well and drain out water from it. Allow it to cool and drink a bit to get relief from headache.

Lavender oil

Lavender oil helps to get relief from headaches and migraines. Inhale the oil or apply it over your head. Add 2 – 4 drops of lavender oil to 3 cups of boiling water. Inhale the oil vapor that gives more relief or pain.


Some foods that works better to control headache are chocolate, sour cream, nuts, peanut butter, and caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea, or cola. This helps them to give you a headache.


Drink plenty of water daily to stay hydrated. It helps you to protect from dehydration and causes of headaches. As well as it also removes toxins in your body.

Hot or cold compress

Apply some hot or cold compress to your forehead and neck that gets instant relief from headache.

Organic food

Take small regular meals that are healthy and organic throughout the day. This helps to keep your blood sugar on an even level. It also helps to prevent headaches.


It is better to intake or increase the amount of juice that does not contain caffeine. It helps to reduce headache that goes away faster.

Ice pack

The cold from ice helps to reduce inflammation that contributes to headaches. Apply an ice pack to the back of your neck that can give you relief from a migraine headache. Place a washcloth dipped in ice-cold water over your head for about 5 minutes. Repeat it several times.


Cloves are used to ease tension headaches. It gives cooling and pain relieving properties. Crush few cloves gently. Keep the powder in a clean cloth or handkerchief. Inhale the smell of that to get relief from headache.


Press and massage the fleshy area between the thumb and index finger, at the highest spot of the muscle when both are brought close together. Do it for about 1 – 2 minutes. Repeat it on the other hand.

Enough sleep

You need to maintain the timings for sleeping. If you don’t have proper sleeping, or lack of sleeping also causes headaches.


Some physical activity like exercising and walking helps to prevent headaches during pregnancy.

Apple cider vinegar

Prepare a mixture of ½ cup of apple cider vinegar with ½ cup of water. Boil the mixture in a covered saucepan. Remove it from the heat when it gets boiled. Leave it for a minute. Lift the cover and inhale the steam through your nose. It will provide instant relief from sinus headaches.


Basil leaves are strong and scented herb. It can be used for natural headache treatment. The oil works as a muscle relaxant and is helpful for headaches that are caused by tension and might muscles.


Take some peppermint oil to soothe for curing headaches and migraines. You just smell this oil that helps to regulate blood flow in the body.

Rosemary oil

Massage your head with rosemary oil that contains menthol to ease migraine pain.

Cinnamon powder

Take 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and grind them into powder. Add this powder to 1 ½ cup of milk. Boil it for about 1 – 2 minutes. Then add a teaspoon of honey. Mix them well and drink it at least twice a day when you are suffering from a headache.
