Home remedies to get rid of tooth pain

A toothache can be constantly throbbing, or may be set off by food or drink. Cavities cause tooth pain, along with fillings that have come loose, a cracked tooth, an abscess, or a sinus condition. Sensitive teeth are not only painful, but also interfere with your daily life. The sensitivity can be caused due to cold or hot foods, drinks, sweet, cold wind.

Teeth are sensitive because their protective outer layers enamel over the crown, or cementum over the root have worn away. The bacteria produce acids that damage your teeth. It reaches a nerve, and misery sets in. The symptoms of toothache are tooth pain, throbbing, swelling, headache, foul tasting drainage from the infected tooth.

Home remedies for toothache

Pepper and salt

Salt and pepper are great to become extremely sensitive that have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Take equal amount of pepper and salt with a few drops of water to form a paste. Apply this paste on the affected tooth and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Repeat it daily for several days.

Warm salt water

Take a glass of warm water and mix some salt into it to treat toothache. Rinse your mouth thoroughly that helps to reduce swelling and inflammation. It also fights the bacteria that cause infection.

Peppermint leaves

Chew some fresh peppermint leaves that help to get relief from toothache. You can also use them by placing dried leaves on infected tooth.


Garlic gives relief from toothache as it has antibiotic and some medicinal properties. It reduces the pain. Mix some crushed garlic clove with some table salt. Apply it directly on the affected tooth that gives pain. Chew one or two cloves of garlic to get relief. Repeat it for a few days to get better results.


Take a potato and cut it into pieces. Place a piece of potato on the affected teeth that can pound a piece of raw potato that is mixed with a bit of salt and use them by mashing.


Asafetida treats toothaches and bleeding gums that can help to treat dental problems. Add a pinch of asafetida to two teaspoons of lemon juice with warm water. Using a cotton pad simply apply the solution to the affected area. This gives you quick relief from the pain. You may also use a clarified butter as an alternative of asafetida to keep in the tooth cavity for instant relief.


Cut a slice of lime and apply it or bite into it to release some of the juice. It gives instant relief from pain.


Cloves have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant and anesthetic properties that help alleviate tooth pain and fight infection. Grind two whole cloves and mix a little olive oil or vegetable oil. Apply it on the affected tooth.

You can also dab a cotton ball in clove oil and rub it directly on the sore tooth. You can also mix a few drops of clove oil in half a glass of water that can be used as a mouth rinse.


Take a fresh piece of cucumber and hold it over the sore area. You can also mash it and add a bit of salt, then place it on the tooth.

Guava leaves

Guava leaves have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial properties. Simply chew one or two tender guava leaves until the juice starts working on the affected tooth. Use raw spinach leaves in the same way.

Take 4 – 5 guava leaves in water and boil them. Allow it to cool that can warm temperature. And add some salt into it. Use this solution as a mouthwash.

Wheat grass juice

It has a natural antibacterial property that helps to fight tooth decay. It relieves toothache that can extract the juice of wheatgrass. It will absorb toxins from the gums, reduce the growth of bacteria, and keep the infection under control. You can simply chew on wheatgrass.


Onions have antiseptic, antimicrobial properties that help to control toothache. It provides relief from pain by killing the germs that cause infection. Chew raw onion for a few minutes to relieve the pain. Try to chew it or place a piece of onion directly on the infected bad tooth or gum.

Vanilla extract

Vanilla extract helps to treat toothache as it helps numb the pain. It has a calming effect. Dip a cotton swab in vanilla extract and dab it on the affected area. Repeat it twice a day till it gets relief.

Ice cubes

Ice helps to alleviate tooth pain in the nerve endings. Wrap a small ice cube in a thin cotton cloth. Hold it on your cheek near the aching tooth for a few minutes. That it exposed nerves. Make it in contact with the cold that can cause more pain. It can ease tooth pain to rub an ice cube between your index finger and thumb for a few minutes.
