Homemade winter skin care tips

In the winter months, however, when activity decreases and leisure time moves indoors, it isn’t as easy to maintain healthy skin. Homemade beauty tips for for skin care in winter.

The season’s beauty vampires – biting winds, steamy showers, dipping temps and drying indoor heat – can suck the life right out of your skin and hair. Whipping winds, dry air and chilly temperatures can really do a number of soft and hairy. Cold air outside and central heat indoors can strip moisture from strands and pores, making hair rough, skin itchy and dry. But endure cracked hands, legs and foot.

For many people, the cold, clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin of the face, hands and feet. For some people, the problem is worse than just a general tight, dry feeling. They get the skin so dry and it results in flaking, cracking, even eczema.

Winter can be a particularly difficult time for your skin. You can follow the tips to keep your skin from falling victim to dryness, cracking and irritation this winter.

Best homemade winter skin care tips and face packs

Drink water for healthy skin

Hydrate your skin from within by drinking lots of water. Carry a bottle with you when you go outside. Herbal tea is also great when it’s really cold. Your skin will soon have a healthy glow. So drink up and don’t let your skin go thirsty.

Exfoliate to get rid of dry skin

Exfoliating your skin regularly is an effective way to rid the skin of dead cells, which tend to be dry and coarse. Plus, it allows moisturizer to penetrate the skin better. Exfoliation promotes cellular renewal by allowing new, moist skin cells to surface. Thus, the new cells are deeply penetrated with moisture, so they will help to keep your skin hydrated longer.

Avoid hot showers and baths

As tempting and as enjoyable as it is to jump into a hot shower on a cold winter day, don’t. “Bathing in hot water breaks down the lipid barriers in your skin, which causes a loss in moisture,” says Dr. Norman. Instead, Dr. Norman recommends taking warm showers, not hot and to avoid staying in for an extended period of time.

Get a facial to get clear skin

Getting a facial is a great way to clear out your skin and start a new season with a clean slate. As the climate changes, so does our skin and an aesthetician can help ease the transition. Starting with healthier, cleaner skin allows your cold weather skin care routine to be more effective.

Moisturizer your skin in winter

You may have a moisturizer that works just fine in the spring and summer, but as weather conditions change, so too, should your skin care routine. Find an “ointment” moisturizer that’s oil-based, rather than water based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion.

It is better to choose your oils with care because not all oils are appropriate for the face. Instead, look for oils like avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil, or almond oil. Shea oil or butter is controversial, because it can clog facial pores. And vegetable shortening, LaPlante says, is a really bad idea. “It would just sit on the skin,” she says. “And it would be really greasy.”

You can also look for lotions containing “humectants,” a class of substances that attract moisture to your skin.

Apply hydrating night cream for the face

If you have uncomfortably dry skin, you may want to consider using a targeted night cream for your face. Night creams are made with reparative and regenerating ingredients, like avocado oil, that penetrate the skin slowly while you sleep and moisturize deep down below the surface for lasting moisture the next day.

Choose cleanser wisely

The wrong soap can worsen itchy, dry skin. For instance, steer clear of regular bar soaps, since they tend to contain irritating ingredients and fragrances. Instead, start washing with a fragrance-free, moisturizing cleanser or gel. You can also prevent winter skin problems by using less soap, so limit you’re lathering to necessary areas, such as your hands, armpits, genitals and feet.

Use milk as cleanser to get smooth skin

If your arms or legs look scaly, try a 12 percent lactic acid lotion. “Celopatra used to bathe in milk because of the lactic acid,” Dr. Barba notes. “It’s an incredibly effective moisturizer, and it also works as a powerful exfoliant, so those scales go away.”

Prevent Irritated & dry eyes in winter

Wind and dry air are not a good combination for sensitive eyes. Sporting sunnies on a sub zero day might look weird, but the lenses can protect eyes from glare and wind. Keep a bottle of non-medicated saline tears or eye drops on hand and use it to refresh eye moisture when needed. Prevent irritation by keeping those well moisturized hands away from the eye area.

Moisturizing face mask during winter

During winter, avoid any facial products with alcohol, and switch to a milder face wash and a thicker moisturizer. Need to mix up the routine a bit? Wash your face once a week with Greek yogurt as it sounds weird, but the lactic acid works as a gentle, non-abrasive exfoliator.

For a moisturizing face mask, take bananas, avocado, egg yolk and milk can all make great moisturizing face treatments. Whole grains and aromatic veggies contain selenium, a compound that gives skin the elasticity to make silly faces. Snack or quinoa, brown rice, onions, or garlic when skin gets tight and dry.

How to get rid of chapped lips in winter

Keeping a tube of lip balm in an easily accessible pocket is a good first step, but winter winds can take chapped lips to a whole new level. If lips are flaky, take a clean toothbrush and very gently exfoliate the skin to remove excess skin. Slather on beeswax or a lip balm with lanolin and keep reapplying throughout the day. Lanolin is a natural moisturizer that softens skin and reduces evaporation, keeping the skin hydrated. For seriously dry lips, apply honey or Vaseline to the lips for 15 minutes and then remove with a cotton swab dipped in hot water.

Use honey for dry & rough skin in winter

To soften stubborn dry patches on rough elbows and knees, opt for a rich, hydrating scrub. “I use a simple mix of honey and sugar,” says Ford makeup artist Lisa Trunda. Studies show that humectants honey reduces inflammation and sugar increases circulation in the skin, says Miami dermatologist Jeremy Green, MD.

“This can be especially helpful in winter when blood flow is typically diverted from the skin to keep your core warm.”

Eat a balanced diet for glowing skin

Eating a healthy diet full of nutrients and vitamins is the best way to keep your skin from looking and feeling healthy. It’s also important to drink enough water to keep your skin and hair hydrated from within. Eating an unbalanced diet will leave your body lacking in the nutrition needed for keeping your skin and hair looking great. Eating well will also make you feel great too! If you have trouble with maintaining a balanced diet then take multivitamins, but remember that this is not an effective replacement for the real thing.

Wear appropriate clothing

Many cold weather fabrics can aggravate dry winter skin. “Keep wool and rough clothing from directly touching your skin,” says Stein Gold. “This can cause dry skin to get irritated and itchy.” Wear soft, breathable materials against your skin, and then pull on a warmer sweater. Protect your hands from the cold winter air with gloves, put cotton or silk glove liners on first.

Drink more fluids

“People also tend to drink more fluids in the warmer months, an important component of healthy skin, because of heat and increased activity.” But “during the summer months, humid air helps to moisturize the skin, and the nourishing minerals in vitamin D are more easily accessible because of the vast amount of sunlight.” Says Dr. Norman.

Breaks are important

Make a habit of taking short, frequent breaks rather than longer less frequent breaks. At least try to take breaks about 2-3 minutes for every 15-20 minutes, 5 minutes for every 30 minutes, or 10 minutes for every hour as a schedule. Also make a habit of walking for a while during lunch hours for refreshment.

Splash water on your face

During breaks, sprinkle water on your face while closing your eyes. This gives an overall relaxing effect and helps you feel refreshed.

Use tea bags

Dip a green tea bag in cold water or in a fridge for some time and place it on eyes and relax. This will prevent the formation of wrinkles and will boost the generation of new cells around the eyes. Green tea is a wonderful repairing agent. This not only soothes tired eyes, but also reduces puffiness.

Drink water

When a person is dehydrated, especially in an air-conditioned office, the body starts storing water as a defense mechanism. So drink plenty of water which helps in reducing puffiness around the eyes and gives relaxation.

Eat healthy diet

Eat vitamins that are rich in A, C, and E with a B complex and zinc food items on a daily basis, eat citrus fruits, dairy products, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, spinach and poultry. Make a habit of carrying a box of chopped carrots, cucumber, and fresh fruits. Have it in meanwhile. This reliefs from stress and gives refreshment.

Contact lenses

Ideally, a person who uses lenses should wear it for not more than 10-12 hours a day. By wearing this lens for a long time before a computer also strains the eyes so much. So avoid it when you relax.

Eye exercises

Eye exercises and massage or acupressure points, are done for every hour that you spend on your computer, are very relaxing and helpful.

Do not forget to blink periodically. Staring at computer screens can dry our eyes and cause redness and irritation.

Use proper posture

Check the monitor screen is at least 50-60 cms far away while using computer. This allows complete blinking thereby reducing symptoms of dryness and eye fatigue. Also blink eyes and that gives rest to the eyes at intervals. Sit in an erect position rather than leaning position. Make sure of taking a break for every 30-60 minutes. At least make a habit of seeing other objects for 3-5 minutes as an interval. Preferably use a desk lamp. Use a wrist support pad if needed.

Keep your monitor bright

Brightness on monitor avoids us from feeling stressed and fatigue so early. This also reduces the flicker rate of the computer. Over flickering may lead to eyestrain and headaches.

Check your monitor’s position

The position of the computer monitor also causes eyestrain. Make sure that it should be placed at the proper distance away from your eyes. The screen should be about 4-5 inches below eye level. It has to be checked from the center of the screen.

Minimize glare

Check whether the monitor is clean and free of dust. Install an antiglare screen. This helps to keep the shades drawn to prevent glare from outside sources so that the eyes cannot easily undergo fatigue.

Try a massage or eye cupping

Massage the area around the eyes that will provide relaxation to the muscles and feel comfort. Rub your hands together to create friction and warmth, then gently cup your palms over your closed eyes and rest them.

These tips can be used easily and conveniently at home and office. This prevents stress, and vision problems. So, friends, check it and save it if you need and these can be easily followed too.

Winter health care guidelines

Every will wear warm clothes and stay as much as they can in their cozy homes in winter. Most of you will spend more time indoors, unfortunately, is what leads us to catching the most common seasonal disease – common cold.

Since we stay close houses with other people indoors, there are more chances to catch an infection. Like, the common cold viruses – there are more than 200 types – have a better chance of an infection during winter since the lining of our nose is drier. While there is no cure for the common cold itself. People with common cold have symptoms like coughing, sore throat, runny nose, sneezing or fever that can be treated. In the same way, the only solution to dealing with the common cold is preventing it from infecting us.

Preventing infections

Dr. Prashant Saxena, head of Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine at Saket City Hospital, suggests a few ways to do so. “Always cover your mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing, and regularly wash your hands with soap and water. The use of a disposable mask or a disposable tissue paper is a good idea if one is suffering from cold and cough. Keep your house clean and maintain a hygienic environment. People with preexisting lung problems must consult a chest specialist during the change in seasons,” he says.

According to Dr. Krishan Chugh, director and head of Paediatrics at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, there are four major points that need to be considered to prevent the seasonal respiratory diseases, especially among children.

“Avoid exposure to the illnesses at home, school, or creche and in crowded places. Second, focus on your child’s nutrition. A good, healthy, and balanced diet is the first step towards having a healthy body. Third, adequate clothing is essential to protect your child from cold temperatures. But a word of caution – please do not over clothe your child since that also can lead to problems. Last but not the least; do not use convection heaters which cause dryness of air.”

Skin problems

The cold weather also results in our skin becoming dry and flaky. According to Dr. Karuna Malhotra, a cosmetologist based in Rajouri Garden, “The onset of winter brings along its own plethora of skin problems. With cold and dry weather dictating the season, it basically becomes compulsory to moisturize our skin more meticulously.” Dr. Malhotra says that people often complain of chilblains during winter, which tends to occur especially in children and women.

“It starts with redness, with swelling and occasionally blistering of fingers and toes. Sometimes it may involve the nose and ears too. These areas might become itchy or painful with the eruptions lasting one to three weeks,” she adds.

Chilblains are the result of an abnormal reaction to the cold. When the skin is exposed to the cold, blood vessels near its surface get narrower. If the skin is then exposed to heat, the blood vessels become wider. When this happens too quickly, blood can leak into the surrounding tissue leading to chilblains.

While further conditions lead to chilblains, the constriction of the blood vessels in itself makes those of us with joint pain or arthritis more susceptible to pain. “In cold weather, to maintain the internal body temperature, the circulation of blood to the peripheral areas is less. This makes the joints less flexible and more painful. Changes in barometric pressure also worsen pain and enhance inflammation in knee joints. Restricted sunlight in winters adds further insult to injury. Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D which provides strength to the bone,” says Dr. L. Tomar, consultant, joint replacement surgeon at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Patparganj.

Better immunity

Apart from all that the individual needs to do, to prevent specific diseases and conditions, the best way to strengthen the body’s immune system in general is to have a balanced diet. “There are certain foods which definitely enhance the immune system to fight infections and brave the cold climate, says Neelanjana Singh, clinical nutritionist at PSRI Hospital at Sheikh Sarai. “These foods are the tulsi leaves, the fruit gooseberry or amla. Also, certain spices such as black pepper and turmeric also help strengthen the immune system. Besides, garlic and tea also have immune enhancing properties. It is important that we regularly consume such foods during winter season to develop and strengthen the immunity.”
