How to cut calories from holiday meals

Do you want to get through the holidays without taking a few extra pounds?

Kristin Porter, author of a food and recipe blog Iowa Girl Eats, says it’s not hard make healthy holiday dishes without sacrificing taste.

“It’s all about moderation, enjoy yourself, because ‘tis’ the season,’ but be mindful about what you’re eating,” said Porter.

There are tips and tricks to people looking for tasty meal ideas without adding a lot of extra fat.

As the mom of a young son, porter has been gluten free ever since giving birth. She says the main reasons people gain weight over the holidays is because they indulge without potion control.

She recommends enjoying holiday’s foods but is small servings. Be mindful of alcohol, she says, because it tends to cause people to overeat and is packed with calories. If at a party with an appetizer table, fill a plate and take it away to eat, instead of standing by the table and grazing.

Porter suggests cutting calories in recipes by making smart substitutions.

“Herbs are a great thing to add to any dish to add a lot of flavor but little to no calories,” said porter.

Butter can be swapped for applesauce and Greek yogurt can be used in baked goods instead of heavy cream, sour cream, or butter. For good health consume mashed potatoes, trade half the potatoes for steamed cauliflower. It won’t change the consistency or taste enough for picky eaters to notice and they’ll be getting veggies while indulging.

She recommends making side dishes with more veggies and less cream. Porter have some recipes like hot to make a quinoa, butternut squash and Brussels sprouts dish that is packed with flavor but not fat.

And as a way to get 2015 off to a fresh start, Porter also has a green detox smoothie for after the big meals, before or after a workout, or for a healthy breakfast.

“It’s a great way to reset after you’ve indulged, and a great way to start the New Year on a healthy note,” said Porter.

Staying Warm and Safe in Winter Weather

Winter is here, and with it often comes mounds of snow or storms that can keep you trapped inside. Or even worse, you may lose power. Winter is sneaking up on us and winter really can be the most wonderful time of the year. But being cold takes all the fun out of it! There are many ways to stay warm, even in the coldest of climates.

Here are some tips to help you prepare ahead of time and keep you safe after, both indoors and out.

Heat

It’s important to have a good heating system in your house; the other half is making sure heat doesn’t escape. Before it gets too cold, take some time to weather strip your windows to keep cold air out (and warm air in). If you don’t have the time for a full weatherproofing, a quick bubble wrap application will do the trick.

  • Close off unneeded rooms and windows, stuff rags or towels under cracks in doors.
  • Ventilate a fireplace or wood stove properly if you use one or room heaters.
  • Dress in loose layers that you can add to or take off as needed.
  • Only use a portable generator outdoors.

Wear an under-layer & frostbite tips

A basic way to stay warmer without having to do very much at all is to wear an under layer. This helps you stay warm without adding a lot of bulk or extra steps.

Try to avoid being outside. If you have to go out, follow these tips from the:

  • Dress as warmly as possible in lightweight layers. Wear a hat, cover your mouth, and use mittens instead of gloves.
  • Get medical help right away if you think you have frostbite.
  • Recognize frostbite symptoms: a loss of feeling or a white or pale looking toes, fingers, ear lobes, or the tip of the nose.
  • If you are shivering uncontrollably, slurring speech, or having memory loss, you could have hypothermia. Get medical help ASAP.
  • Get to a warm area and remove wet clothing. If you can’t do that, use your body heat to warm the frostbitten area.

Snows/Storms

Stay as far away as you can from things like rain, snow, puddles, ice, and wind. As these things getting too close is what makes you feel cold. Move quickly between buildings, use a car when you can and when you must be outside and try to walk under a shelter.

Get together needed supplies ahead of time as much as possible, including:

  • Extra food, including foods that don’t need to be refrigerated.
  • Bottled water.
  • Flashlights and batteries and other battery powered items in case the power fails.
  • An ice melting product for slippery sidewalks.
  • A non-electric can opener.
  • Extra blankets and sleeping bags.

Create heat

If your clothes themselves can’t keep you warm, let your body create heat. Moving around will burn energy in your body, which gets expressed as heat. Try exercising or at least try not to stand still.

  • Jumping jacks are a good option if you’re inside. However, when you’re outside movement like that can be dangerous because of slippery ground conditions. A better way to get active when you’re outside is to do small lunges, which create less chance for slipping.

Medicines

If your medicine needs to be refrigerated, throw it out if the power has been out for a long period of time. The exception: if you can’t get new medication and you need it, continue to take it.

Consume warm foods and beverages

Delicious winter soups and hot cocoa are part of the fun of the season. Hot tea and coffee, and substantial foods like pizza, meat, and toast will keep your body warm as well.

Shoveling Snow

Find a place to get cozy, wrap yourself in army style wool thick blankets and slowly but surely your trapped body heat will warm you right up!

  • Don’t shovel if you have a history of heart disease or heart attack or stroke, or are not in good physical condition.
  • Don’t drink alcohol before or after.
  • Take frequent breaks.
  • Don’t eat a heavy meal before or after.

How to get rid of acidity problem with home remedies

Many people are suffering from acidity at some point in our lives. Nowadays people are more attracted by outside foods at restaurants to eat fast foods, pizza, burger, snacks, bakery items, sweets etc., either is that extra sweet at a family function or that spicy samosa during tea break. What may be the reason, acidity can be quite an uncomfortable experience and sometimes we are left with no option but to reach out for that bottle of antacid.

There are many possible causes for your upset stomach. Many of us eat too much or eat too fast. We don’t eat enough fiber. We skip meals and then subject our systems to a gigantic plate of food.

Gas production is a normal part of the digestive process and, unless it’s excessive, usually indicates a healthy intake of fiber and a well-functioning digestive tract. Most foods that contain carbohydrate may be anything from beans to bagels that are not completely broken down during digestion, so the resident bacteria in your intestines take over, producing gas as they complete the digestive process. A normal person passes gas about 14 times a day, releasing about a half liter of gas in the process.

Causes of stomach upset

Your stomach is upset due to something you ate or drank. This may be due to food poisoning, overeating & drinking and eating certain types of foods.

  • Food poisoning is due to the reason that the food becomes contaminated with viruses, bacteria or parasites; it can cause upset stomach, nausea, vomiting or fever.
  • If you eat or drink too much, you can get indigestion or an upset stomach due to overeating and drinking.
  • Eating certain types of foods like greasy, spicy or fatty foods that can sometimes cause indigestion or an upset stomach.
  • Eating too fast or eating on the run, emotional stress and travel
  • Smoking, too much alcohol or caffeine
  • Upset stomach can be a sign of a medical issue, such as gastro esophageal reflux disease, ulcers, lactose, intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome and intestinal infection.

Home remedies to prevent gas and digestive problems

Chew thoroughly

More chewing helps your stomach acids do their job more effectively and can dramatically reduce the bacterial gas that gets formed. Chewing is even more important when you’re eating vegetables and high fiber foods, because they are more difficult to breakdown in your mouth and stomach. You need to grow accustomed to chewing each bite of food more than you did for processed foods.

Take smaller bites

Taking smaller bites can help ensure that large chunks of food do not reach your intestine undigested. People who take smaller bites also tend to eat slowly, which helps prevent overeating and another cause of poor digestion.

Drink plenty of water

Drink more water, non-carbonated liquids and clear soup, but avoid soda and beer. If you do drink a beverage like beer, pour it in a glass first to let some of the fizz out.

Cut down on certain foods

The major causes of intestinal gas are what we eat and drink. Although everyone is affected differently, the foods that cause problems are usually those high in fiber or carbohydrates, which are hard to digest. Some of them include beans, peas, whole grains, cabbage, grapes, plums, raisins, corn, onions and soft drinks. We have also foods that contain milk or wheat can cause discomfort for people who are intolerant to them.

Eat foods rich in fiber

Fiber encourages passage of material through the digestive system and gives the correct consistency and bulk to stools. You should consume at least 30g of fiber per day. A balanced diet that is rich in fiber may reduce the risk of developing diverticular disease, heart disease or colorectal cancer.

Incorporate fermented dairy products

Certain probiotics, or the good bacteria that is found in dairy products like yogurt and cottage cheese, may improve intestinal function and overall digestive health and benefit health conditions such as gastroenteritis, irregularity, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.

Exercise and manage stress

Regular cardiovascular exercise helps to strengthen the muscles of the abdomen and reduces sluggishness by stimulating the intestinal muscles to push digestive contents through your system.

Stress effects the nerves of the digestive system and can upset the intricate balance of digestion. In some people stress slows the process of digestion, causing bloating, pain and constipation while others may need to frequently empty their bowels and the stools may be more loose and watery. Stress may worsen some conditions such as peptic ulcers or irritable bowel syndrome.

Food that you keep in the freezer at all times

Imagine a world where you could eat something different for dinner every night of the week without having to start a meal from scratch each time. A reality where, say, seemingly time-consuming dishes like homemade pizza, could actually be ready in minutes.

Times are based on a freezer set at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Storing and eating frozen foods past these deadlines isn’t dangerous, but flavors and textures will begin to deteriorate.

The key to this wonderful existence where every night is a different culinary adventure lies in your freezer. Here are some things you might not think to keep in your freezer but definitely should.

Shredded cheese

That good hunk of cheese left over from one of these recipes which inevitably seems to go moldy before you can even eat it all doesn’t have to go bad. If you want to use it next time you have leftovers, shred the remainder of the cheese, freeze it in a plastic bag, and thaw it out in just a few minutes as you need it.

Sliced bread

Having sliced bread in your freezer is the best thing since sliced bread–no really. Just pop it in the oven or toaster and make yourself a sandwich. So it is time saving and be ready in a minute when you are hungry. It is something trendy like avocado toast.

Nuts

The freezer actually makes nuts last longer because it keeps the oils in them from going rancid which makes them to be fresh at any time. If you buy your nuts in bulk, only keep out what you think you will eat soon and freeze the rest. They thaw really quickly on your kitchen counter and you can always have them on hand for pestos, salads, baking, or snacking.

Cooked grains

We’re going to go ahead and make a bold statement right now: You should probably always cook more grains than you think you need. Cooked rice is one of the best things you can have in your freezer and you’ll be so happy to come home after a long day and know that you don’t have to wait 30 minutes to cook a new batch. Just store it in a freezer-proof container and add a couple tablespoons of water to a saucepan or microwave-safe bowl to heat it back up again. As it is time saving and best to be on hunger.

Puff pastry

Frozen puff pastry is a lifesaver for the last minute host/hostess. You can transform into an impressive and insanely delicious appetizer, main, or dessert in almost no time. You just need to heat it up and have it at your snacks.

Wine

Did you fall a little short in finishing that bottle of vine last night? Freeze it in an ice-cube tray and just pop a cube into your pan the next time your recipe calls for some wine. Your pasta sauces will thank you. Have it when you want it with hot recipes.

Pizza Dough

If you’re one of those people who likes to eat pizza weekly (like we do), then having some pizza dough in your freezer isn’t a bad idea. Just thaw it in the fridge 24 hours before you want to eat it, then roll it out, top it off with deliciousness, and bake it as normal with your desired recipes.

 Bacon

We love to freeze bacon slices because it thaws really quickly at room temperature and, well, because we always want to eat it. Wrap 3 to 4 slices side by side in parchment paper before putting in a freezer-proof bag. It’s better to store them in freezer as soon as you have finished off and place the remaining bacon in the freezer.

Citrus

If you happen to have a family member in Florida who sends you care packages of citrus (or maybe you just bought too many lemons one day), you might want to keep some of those fruits in your freezer. Just wash the skin and cut away any broken or bruised spots that could contain micro-organisms that lead to food-borne illness. You can freeze the fruits whole, cut in half, or sliced into sections.

Ripe Bananas

Who actually has the foresight to prepare for banana bread craving by buying bananas a week ahead of time and waiting for them to be ready? Thanks to your freezer, now you don’t have to because you can just freeze your ripe bananas and have them handy the next time you’ve got a hankering. Adding a frozen banana to smoothies makes it super creamy and have you guys ever had banana soft serve like this.

The foods that you can store in the freezer are as follows.

  • Chicken or turkey pieces, uncooked: nine months
  • Fruit pies, unbaked: eight months
  • Fruit: 6 to 12 months
  • Steaks, uncooked: 6 to 12 months
  • Butter: 6 to 9 months
  • Lean fish: six months
  • Roasts, uncooked: 4 to 12 months
  • Chicken or turkey, cooked: 4 to 6 months
  • Chops, uncooked: 4 to 6 months

6 Healthy Eating Tips for Glowing Skin

We strive for glowing, radiant skin is constantly on our minds. To help your skin look its best with six simple habits that can definitely help you to get your skin glow.

Fruit and veggie rich diet

A UK study found that photos of subjects who ate a fruit and veggie rich diet were rated as more attractive than those with suntans! Scientists say antioxidants are the key, because they improve circulation, and alter skin pigment. Those thought to have the greatest impact are lycopene, which gives tomatoes their red color and watermelon its pink hue, and beta-carotene, found in carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, broccoli, and leafy greens. Polyphenols, which cause blood to rush to the skin surface, also play a role. They’re found in dark grapes, cherries, plums, apples, blackberries, and blueberries.

Include “good” fat in every meal

Today most of people don’t know that not all fats are created equal, but many don’t realize the beauty benefits of consuming enough good fat i.e., cells in the top layer of your skin only live about 30 days, and while you don’t feel or see it happening, you shed up to 40,000 skin cells every minute of the day. Healthy fats help you absorb more antioxidants – up to 13 times more according to some research. Include a moderate amount of plant-based fat in every meal, like a tablespoon of extra virgin coconut or olive oil, a quarter of a ripe avocado, or two tablespoons of nuts or seeds.

Eat to fight age-promoters

Nasty substances called advanced glycation endproducts or AGEs are produced when food is cooked to high temperatures using dry heat, like roasting, baking, broiling, and grilling. Studies have found that AGEs lower the body’s ability to control inflammation; a known trigger of premature aging, so minimizing your intake is a smart strategy for maintaining youthful skin. To slash them, whip up more “naked” veggie dishes, like summer slaw, marinated cucumbers, and sliced vine-ripened tomatoes dressed with fresh basil and balsamic. And when you do cook, use lower temperatures, even if it takes a little longer. One study found that scrambled eggs cooked over medium-low heat contained about half the AGE levels of those prepared over high heat.

Nix dehydrators

Ms. Perry reportedly became a teetotaler, and traded coffee for green tea; two changes that may help your skin stay better hydrated, since alcohol and caffeine are both diuretics. In addition to its toxic effects, beer, wine and liquor interfere with sleep, and lead to water retention (i.e. puffy eyes and face). As for coffee versus tea, an eight ounce cup of brewed java packs 100-200 mg of caffeine, compared to just 20-40 in the same sized serving of green tea. After one cup of coffee, switch to green tea or water, and for every 12-ounce beer (bottle or can), 5-ounce wine (a little smaller than a single serve yogurt container), or 1.5-ounce serving of distilled spirits (shot glass), drink a full glass of H2O.

Choose collagen-building foods

Fortunately, a healthy diet can help defy gravity, at least a bit. One study led by researchers at Manchester and Newcastle Universities found that consuming a combo of cooked tomatoes and olive oil led to much higher levels of pro-collagen, a molecule that gives skin its structure and keeps it firm. Other foods known to support collagen and improve skin stability include citrus fruits, peppers, tea, and berries.

Reach for foods that fight UV rays (including chocolate!)

In one recent study, a group of women added hot cocoa with either high or low flavonoids content to their daily breakfasts. After exposing the ladies’ to UV light, researchers found that the skin of those who drank the flavonoids-rich cocoa experienced up to 25% less reddening, compared to no change in the low flavonoids group. In addition, after 12 weeks, the skin of the flavonoids-rich drinkers was 16% denser, 11% thicker, 13% moister, 30% less rough, and 42% less scaly than at the start of the experiment. The foods scientifically shown to fight sun damage include green leafy vegetables, and fatty fish like salmon and sardines. Both work by reducing inflammation and inhibiting the DNA damage that leads to sunburns.
