Health benefits: Strange but true health tips with coffee

Nowadays people are following health tips to make their busy schedule with small changes in their diet. Many methods to improve your health are pretty straightforward: to lose weight, eat less and exercise more; to boost your energy, get more sleep; to prevent dehydration, drink more water. Others, however, are totally counterintuitive. The following tips really do work—but they may leave you scratching your head.

Drink coffee to have a better nap

In a Japanese study that examined how to make the most of a nap, people who took a “coffee nap”—consuming about 200 milligrams of caffeine i.e., the amount in one to two cups of coffee and then immediately taking a 20-minute rest—felt more alert and performed better on the computer tests than those who only took a nap.

Why does this work? A 20-minute nap ends just as the caffeine kicks in and clears the brain of a molecule called adenosine, maximizing alertness.

Dr. Allen Towfigh, medical director of New York Neurology & Sleep Medicine, said “Adenosine is a byproduct of wakefulness and activity,”. “As adenosine levels increase, we become more fatigued. Napping clears out the adenosine and, when combined with caffeine, an adenosine-blocker, further reduces its effects and amplifies the effects of the nap.”

Don’t brush after eating for healthy teeth

Don’t brush your teeth immediately after meals and drinks, especially if they were acidic. Howard R. Gamble, immediate past president of the Academy of General Dentistry said that acidic foods—citrus fruits, sports drinks, tomatoes, soda (both diet and regular)—can soften tooth enamel “like wet sandstone”.

Brushing your teeth at this stage can speed up acid’s effect on your enamel and erode the layer underneath. Gamble suggests waiting 30 to 60 minutes before brushing.

To wear a smaller size, gain weight

Muscle weight, i.e., if two women both weigh 150 pounds and only one lifts weights, the lifter will most likely fit into a smaller pant size than her sedentary counterpart. Likewise, a 150-pound woman who lifts weights could very well wear the same size as a 140-pound woman who doesn’t exercise. The reason behind this is that although a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle, muscle takes up less space, said Mark Nutting, fitness director of SACO Sport & Fitness in Saco, Maine. He said, “You can get bigger muscles and get smaller overall if you lose the fat”. “The bulk so many women fear only occurs if you don’t lose fat and develop muscle on top of it.”

To eat less, eat more

Amy Goodson, RD, dietitian for Texas Health Ben Hogan Sports Medicine, said that grabbing a 100-calorie snack pack of cookies or pretzels may seem virtuous, but it’s more likely to make you hungrier than if you ate something more substantial.

“Eating small amounts of carbohydrates does nothing but spikes your blood sugar and leaves you wanting more carbs.”

Goodson recommends choosing a protein such as peanut butter or string cheese with an apple.

“They are higher in calories per serving, but the protein, fat and help you get full faster and stay full longer—and you end up eating fewer calories overall,” she said.

Skip energy drinks when you’re tired

Goodson says that energy drinks contain up to five times more caffeine than coffee, but the boost they provide is fleeting and comes with unpleasant side effects like nervousness, irritability, and rapid heartbeat. Plus, energy drinks often contain high levels of taurine, a central nervous system stimulant, and upwards of 50 grams of sugar per can (that’s 13 teaspoons worth!). The sweet stuff spikes blood sugar temporarily, only to crash soon after, leaving you sluggish and foggy headed—and reaching for an energy drink.

Drink a hot beverage to cool off

Two recent studies say the latter—and so do others where drinking hot tea in hot weather is the norm, like in India. When you sip a hot beverage, your body senses the change in temperature and increases your sweat production. Then, as the sweat evaporates from your skin, you cool off naturally.

Healthy coffee drinking tips

Organic coffee beans

Choose organic beans, which are good for health. The healthier coffee drinking starts a day for most of the Indian people. Some of the organic foods such as equal exchange, dean’s beans and Indigo coffee roaster are best to get coffee. This is the best way to get a flavored coffee with natural organic beans, which are not artificial flavorings.

Buy whole beans and freshly grind them at home

Coffee beans begin to break down to become once the inner contents and are exposed to oxygen and moisture. The process is of naked eyes that is cut open with an apple and let’s see what happens. The white flesh starts turning brown pretty fast due to heavy exposure to oxygen and moisture. They’re also the enemies of anti-oxidants that create stability and health in living systems and ward off disease. Those anti-oxidants start to oxidize immediately after grinding that tastes fresh anymore.

Drinking coffee after a meal

This is the habit of most people who would be breakfast and drink coffee after a meal. But, it is better not to drink coffee on an empty stomach, drink it after eating some food. Caffeine causes your body to release sugar into your bloodstream that turn causes the pancreas to release insulin. This causes a sharp drop in blood sugar that can set up more sugar cravings. The caffeine in coffee suppresses your appetite causing longer without feeling hungry. This can lower blood sugar and further leads to coffee and sugar craving. The food in your stomach helps to modulate this blood sugar and response to keep those cravings at bay.

Cut down sugar in coffee

Cutting down sugar in the coffee is the most important tip for a healthier coffee drinking. I was really craving to have my coffee was the sugar more than the caffeine. But I ditched the sugar, due to palette became more attuned to various types of roasts and regional variations. Try to add cream instead of sugar in your coffee. This helps to get the sugar out once and for all. The fat in the cream will cut the bitterness of coffee. Cream is a natural sweetness that helps you wean off the refined white stuff.

One cup of coffee per day

One cup is not a starbucks, twenty plus ounce mega grande French vanilla frappuccino with whip cream and chocolate syrup. It can resemble a giant caramel coffee coolatta from Dunkin Donuts, which is eight ounces. You need to handle it with a few people who drink coffee all day long with 5, 10, 15 cups. Reduce slowly and cut it down to one cup. Reducing caffeine content includes a second brewing from the same beans that includes half decaf in each cup.

Winter health care guidelines

Every will wear warm clothes and stay as much as they can in their cozy homes in winter. Most of you will spend more time indoors, unfortunately, is what leads us to catching the most common seasonal disease – common cold.

Since we stay close houses with other people indoors, there are more chances to catch an infection. Like, the common cold viruses – there are more than 200 types – have a better chance of an infection during winter since the lining of our nose is drier. While there is no cure for the common cold itself. People with common cold have symptoms like coughing, sore throat, runny nose, sneezing or fever that can be treated. In the same way, the only solution to dealing with the common cold is preventing it from infecting us.

Preventing infections

Dr. Prashant Saxena, head of Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine at Saket City Hospital, suggests a few ways to do so. “Always cover your mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing, and regularly wash your hands with soap and water. The use of a disposable mask or a disposable tissue paper is a good idea if one is suffering from cold and cough. Keep your house clean and maintain a hygienic environment. People with preexisting lung problems must consult a chest specialist during the change in seasons,” he says.

According to Dr. Krishan Chugh, director and head of Paediatrics at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, there are four major points that need to be considered to prevent the seasonal respiratory diseases, especially among children.

“Avoid exposure to the illnesses at home, school, or creche and in crowded places. Second, focus on your child’s nutrition. A good, healthy, and balanced diet is the first step towards having a healthy body. Third, adequate clothing is essential to protect your child from cold temperatures. But a word of caution – please do not over clothe your child since that also can lead to problems. Last but not the least; do not use convection heaters which cause dryness of air.”

Skin problems

The cold weather also results in our skin becoming dry and flaky. According to Dr. Karuna Malhotra, a cosmetologist based in Rajouri Garden, “The onset of winter brings along its own plethora of skin problems. With cold and dry weather dictating the season, it basically becomes compulsory to moisturize our skin more meticulously.” Dr. Malhotra says that people often complain of chilblains during winter, which tends to occur especially in children and women.

“It starts with redness, with swelling and occasionally blistering of fingers and toes. Sometimes it may involve the nose and ears too. These areas might become itchy or painful with the eruptions lasting one to three weeks,” she adds.

Chilblains are the result of an abnormal reaction to the cold. When the skin is exposed to the cold, blood vessels near its surface get narrower. If the skin is then exposed to heat, the blood vessels become wider. When this happens too quickly, blood can leak into the surrounding tissue leading to chilblains.

While further conditions lead to chilblains, the constriction of the blood vessels in itself makes those of us with joint pain or arthritis more susceptible to pain. “In cold weather, to maintain the internal body temperature, the circulation of blood to the peripheral areas is less. This makes the joints less flexible and more painful. Changes in barometric pressure also worsen pain and enhance inflammation in knee joints. Restricted sunlight in winters adds further insult to injury. Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D which provides strength to the bone,” says Dr. L. Tomar, consultant, joint replacement surgeon at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Patparganj.

Better immunity

Apart from all that the individual needs to do, to prevent specific diseases and conditions, the best way to strengthen the body’s immune system in general is to have a balanced diet. “There are certain foods which definitely enhance the immune system to fight infections and brave the cold climate, says Neelanjana Singh, clinical nutritionist at PSRI Hospital at Sheikh Sarai. “These foods are the tulsi leaves, the fruit gooseberry or amla. Also, certain spices such as black pepper and turmeric also help strengthen the immune system. Besides, garlic and tea also have immune enhancing properties. It is important that we regularly consume such foods during winter season to develop and strengthen the immunity.”

Some of you many not aware! Which country consumes most of the world’s cheese?

Here is the answer, France. But while there are known for their fromage – loving ways, they still manage to avoid the harrowing obesity rates that plague the U.S.

The French are both mocked for the amount of cheese they eat and envied because it doesn’t seem to make them fat. Every one thinks that France has the highest consumption rate of cheese in the world because it produces the largest amount of cheese annually. More than 1000 varieties are produced in a fiscal year within the French country. But in fact from usage point of view, Germany is the largest cheese consumer in the world as compared to the other countries of the world. Different countries have different consumption rates.

According to a new report from the International Dairy Federation, Europeans consume a staggering amount of cheese. The top ten cheese eating countries are all in Europe, with each person putting away at least 43 pounds of cheese per year. The average French person consumes 57 pounds.

The report also highlighted a new trend in other global markets. While the Chinese ate less than 0.074 pounds of cheese per person in 2013, Chinese cheese imports increased 22 percent from the previous year, reported by the Wall Street Journal. The trend may be due in part to the rising popularity of cheesy fast foods like pizza across Asian markets.

“The global cheese market is characterized by the fact that several of the leading producing and exporting countries are also among the largest cheese importers”, the IDF said.

Cheese is good for your health. It is widely used food which is derived from the milk and it is available in diverse flavors and textures. Consume more cheese than the rest of world as it has a wide range of proteins and fats naturally included in composition which are beneficial for the human health. Its good and huge production requires a reasonable time effort and education.

Benefits of eating dark chocolate

Chocolate has a bad reputation in the food community because most (read: milk) chocolate is packed with sugar and doesn’t offer any real nutrition. But dark chocolate can actually be very healthful.

The study proves that dark chocolate-sweet, rich and delicious-is good for more than curing a broken heart. The secret behind its powerful punch is cacao, also the source of the sweet’s distinct taste. It is packed with healthy chemicals like flavonoids and theobromine, this little bean is a disease-killing bullet. Cacao on its own is bitter, chalky, nasty stuff. Though raw cacao is very good for you, it’s not sweet like the chocolate you find in candy bars at the grocery store, which has been roasted and made more palatable with sugar and oftentimes vanilla.

But this means that you shouldn’t take these health benefits as a go-ahead to eat a bar of store-bought chocolate every day. Made from the seed of the cocoa tree, it is one of the best sources of anti-oxidants on the planet. Try to stick with raw dark chocolate and consume it in moderation; just a few bites a day will satisfy your sweet tooth without going overboard. Roasting chocolate at high temperatures removes a lot of the benefits, so try to find some raw chocolate bars that don’t add lots of sugar.

You’ll notice that bars of dark chocolate have percentages on the packaging; these numbers reference the proportion of cacao in the bar. While eating dark chocolate can lead to the health benefits that chocolate is also high in fat. The higher the percentage, the less sugar (and other flavorings) added and more health benefits the chocolate has.

Dark chocolate is a great choice for baking, as it’s not overly sweet. Try it in all kinds of baked goods, like dark chocolate cookies and banana bread, healthier snacks like kale chips, and even dark hot chocolate.

Bad cholesterol reduction

Dark chocolate is loaded with nutrients that can positively affect your health. Along with a healthy diet and exercise, dark chocolate may help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterol (HDL). In the long term, this should cause much less cholesterol to lodge in the arteries and we should see a lower risk of heart disease over the long term.

Weight loss

Chocolate can also aid in weight loss, because it can help one feel fuller. Dark chocolate, in particular, is rich in fiber, helping to keep people full so they will then not feel the need to eat as much. It reduces cravings for sweet, salty and fatty foods. Chocolate can cause breakouts, dark chocolate is actually very good for the skin. The flavonoids in dark chocolate give some protection against UV damage from sun exposure. In research it is found that three months of eating chocolate with high levels of flavonoids, people’s skin took twice as long to show sunburn.

Blood pressure lowering

The flavanols in dark chocolate can stimulate the endothelium, the lining of arteries, to produce Nitric Oxide (NO), which is a gas. Eating a few bites of dark chocolate can improve your blood pressure with polyphenols, which help increase the oxygen flow through your arteries. One of the functions of NO is to send signals to the arteries to relax, which lowers resistance to blood flow and therefore reduces blood pressure.

Prevents diabetes

Chocolate can actually work to prevent diabetes. People who ate one dark chocolate candy bar each day for 15 days had a huge drop in potential for insulin resistance. Claudio Ferri, M.D., the lead researcher of the study, said, “Flavonoids increase nitric oxide production and that helps control insulin sensitivity.”

Calming effects

Chocolate has been known to improve one’s mood. It also has been proven to reduce stress. Chocolate produces serotonin, which releases lots of good feelings in your brain and allows you to de-stress naturally. Chocolate contains flavonoids, which boost blood flow to the brain, causing people to feel more alert and awake. The increase of blood flow to the brain caused by flavonols may also increase the flow of blood to the retina, which could boost vision.

Heart-healthy

Dark chocolate improves blood flow and may help prevent the formation of blood clots. It helps to reduce risk of h eart attack and stroke than those that did not consume dark chocolate. This is due to antioxidant compounds found in chocolate known as flavonoids, which increase flexibility in veins and arteries. Eating dark chocolate may also prevent arterioscelerosis i.e., the antioxidants in dark chocolate help prevent heart disease by improving blood flow and protecting against hardening of the arteries. Choose dark chocolate with high cocoa content for maximum antioxidants. In fact, one chocolate bar has five times the flavonoids of an apple.

Kale contains a type of phyto-nutrient that appears to lessen the occurrence of a wide variety of cancers, including breast and ovarian. The phytonutrients in kale trigger the liver to produce enzymes that neutralize potentially cancer-causing substances. The leafy super food is loaded with sulphur and fiber; both great detoxifiers that help keep the liver healthy.

Eating your greens doesn’t have to be a chore. Try it in smoothies, pestos or create a sweet and savoury meal like a cumin roasted beets, kale and feta salad. It helps to maintain normal blood clotting that improves the immune system and is a great diet food that’s full of nutrients but very few calories.

Beans

Beans an excellent source of fibre and are chock full of protein, which promotes a healthy heart. Powerful vitamin B6 in beans is great for reducing skin inflammations. A cup of beans packs 15 grams of protein, with none of the artery-clogging saturated fat found in meat. Plus, they’re full of heart-healthy fiber, antioxidants and energy boosting iron.

Coconut oil

The multi-purpose health food is garnering a lot of attention. Fatty acids help strengthen the skin’s connective tissues, reducing the appearance of fine line. Because it’s so pure, coconut oil acts as a great moisturizer and can improve the lipid content of your skin. The medium chain fatty acids found in coconut oil have anti- bacterial and antifungal properties, which can help skin, ward off infections and breakouts. Coconut oils is also used in oil pulling, the activity of swishing oil in your mouth for 20 minutes to draw out the toxins. It’s an oral health savior, ingested, it boosts metabolism, stabilizes blood sugar levels and kills bacteria.

Calcium

Calcium helps build strong bones and prevents osteoporosis. Calcium helps with weight loss. More than half of women in their 20s get less than the 1,000mg of calcium they need daily to do that. Here is the calcium levels recommended for adults as follows.

  • Age 9 to 18 — 1,300 mg
  • Age 19 to 50 — 1,000 mg
  • Age 51 and more — 1,200 mg

Dark Chocolate

Dr. Avviva Romm, President of the American Herbalists Guild, says that the high antioxidant levels make it a perfect indulgence. It’s just like chocolate to crash the party, but it’s no mistake that the dark variety confers health benefits. Chocolate is high in flavonoids, substances that have been shown to improve blood flow, suppress cough, improve memory, and give you hydrates smooth skin. Dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants and can lower blood pressure. The darker it is, the lower the fat and sugar content. It is recommended that you look for chocolate with 60% or higher cocoa content; the darker, the better.

Oats

Oats are rich in fiber and rich source of magnesium, potassium and phytonutrients. They contain a special type of fiber that helps to lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease. Magnesium works to regulate blood sugar levels and research suggests that eating whole grain oats may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Turmeric

The root that gives curry its orange color is the go-to natural drug for treating many ailments such as liver disease and breast cancer, there’s even new research that suggests the curcumin in the spice could help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Turmeric is an antioxidant that can be very beneficial to your health as well. If the plan is to add it into a drink recipe, only add a little suggests Bonci, as it can create strong, savory flavor.

Beets

Beets are also a good source of folate, which guards against birth defects, colon cancer and osteoporosis and are high in fiber and beta-carotene. The pigment betacyanin, which gives beets their distinctive hue which is just one of several disease-fighting phytonutrients found in this root vegetable.

Garlic

Garlic is great for killing infections like athlete’s foot. Garlic is a super food and anti-bacterial properties and is nothing to sneer at a tad strong in the raw form as this immune-boosting. It is ideal for warding off colds, flues and preventing hardening of the arteries.

Acai and Goji Berries

Superfoods have health benefits as reported by people who use them.  Goji is high in vitamin C and bioflavonoids which help to protect the heart, improve circulation, strengthen blood capillaries, build collagen, and act as a major antioxidant, as well as regenerating other antioxidants like vitamin E.  For example, those who eat the goji berry as part of their diet tend to have better circulation and fewer incidences of heart disease.  They also tend to balance blood sugar. Another antioxidant fruit is the acai berry.  This fruit has particularly good heart protective benefits, with its strong antioxidant anthocyanins and rich levels of vitamin C and E.

Eggs

Eggs play a beneficial part of your diet if you’re looking to achieve health, strength and energy. Most people raising livestock for eggs have ducks and chickens. If you aren’t able to raise your own, chicken eggs are the most widely available and affordable. Some people may have an allergy to chicken eggs and can have digestive problems. Somehow the health industry has convinced the population that egg yolks are unhealthy. More than a few restaurants and cafes offer an egg white sandwich or meal.

Acai Berry

Acai berry is one of the buzziest super foods now-a-days. This rainforest grown, grape-like fruit packs a megadose of antioxidants, fatty acids and protein in just single handful. You can get some of the benefits from applying aca topically, according to Dr. Wechsler. Acai is particularly dense in anthosyanins, the same antiaging compound found in red wine.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate is ruby-red fruit which is rich in vitamin C and can help smooth, brighten skin, says Dr. Wechsler, as well as ellagic acid, an antioxidant believed to help slow the breakdown of collagen, thereby leading to fewer wrinkles. Pomegranate pigments abound in pure lip & cheek tint, contributing to the all-natural formula’s rich color payoff.

High milk consumption may not cut risk of bone fractures

Milk is rich in calcium; a key component of bones may increase risk of fractures by over consumption.

A study in the British Medical Journal suggests, drinking lots of milk may not lower the risk of fracturing bones

The research, conducted in Sweden, found that women who drank more than three glasses of milk a day were actually more likely to break bones than those who had less consumption of milk.

The researchers cautioned that their work only suggested a trend and should not be interpreted as proof that high milk consumption caused fractures.

Factors such as alcohol and weight were likely to play a role, they said.

Twice the chance

Milk has been recommended as a good source of calcium for many years, but studies that looked into the link between milk and fewer fractures had conflicting results.

A team of scientists in Sweden examined the dietary habits of 61,400 women in 1987 -1990 and 45,300 men in 1997 and then monitored their general health for years afterwards.

Participants were asked to complete questionnaires on how frequently they consumed common foods such as milk, yoghurt and cheese over a one-year period.

Participants were asked about how frequently they consumed common foods such as milk, yoghurt, and cheese over a year period.

In the 20-year follow-up period, the women were monitored; those who drank more than three glasses, or 680ml, of milk a day were more likely to develop fractures than those who had consumed less milk.

The high-intake group had a higher risk of death too.

“Women who drank three or more glasses a day had twice the chance of dying at the end of the study than those who drank less than one glass a day,” said Prof Karl Michaelsson, lead researcher at Uppsala University.

“And those who had a high milk intake also had a 50% higher risk of hip fracture.”

The men surveyed showed a similar, but less pronounced, trend, 11 years after the initial survey.

Opposite pattern

When fermented milk products such as yoghurt were considered, the opposite pattern was observed – people who consumed more had a lower risk of fractures.

Prof Michaelsson says the findings could be due to sugars in milk, which have been shown to accelerate ageing in some early animal studies.

“Our results may question the validity of recommendations to consume high amounts of milk to prevent fragility fractures.”

“The results should, however, be interpreted cautiously given the observational design of our study.”

He also said “Dietary advice should not be changed until more research had been conducted.”

The study was of limited use. “We do not have a feel for the influence of physical activity or other lifestyle habits important to bone or overall mortality,” said by Prof Sue Lanham-New, from the University of Surrey.

“And the effect of increasing body mass index has not been fully investigated in this study.”

“Milk and dairy products in the UK provide 50-60% of the calcium in our diet.”

“We know that low calcium intake (less than 400mg a day) is a risk factor for osteoporosis.”

“Individuals should still be encouraged to consume a balanced diet from the five key food groups of which milk and dairy are key.”

Research found that shift work dulls your brain

A study at the University of Swansea and Toulouse has found that working a decade on varying shifts can age the brain by more than six years. Because many of us work irregular hours it could be doing serious harm. A new study has suggested that working odd hours can have a seriously damaging effect on the human brain.

In a French study, researchers assessed 3,232 adults using a variety of cognitive tests and tests and compared the results between people who reported they had never performed shift work for more than 50 days per year with those that had. They analyzed the results, comparing the number of years of rotating shift work performed and how long ago the shift work had stopped.

According to the study, those who do shift work for more than 10 years seem to have the equivalent of an extra 6.5 years of age related decline in memory and thinking skills. The good news is that when people in the study quit shift work, their brains did recover, even if it took five years.

There are more chances of developing breast cancer for long term shift workers. According to research, shifts are linked to increased risk of heart attacks, obesity, strokes. There may be a possibility of major accidents during night shifts.

“It was quite a substantial decline in brain function, it is likely that when people trying to undertake complex cognitive tasks, then they might make more mistakes and slip-ups, maybe one in 100 makes a mistake with a very large consequence, but it’s hard to say how big a difference it would make in day-to-day life” said by Dr Philip Tucker, who is part of the research team in Swansea.

There was some good news because shift workers were able to reverse the damage by changing their working hours, although it could take as long as five years.

He also said “There are ways to mitigate the effects in the way you design work schedules and regular medical checkups … should include cognitive performance tests to look for danger signs”.

“The reversibility is a really exciting finding because no-one else has shown it and no matter how compromised a person may be, there’s always hope of recovery,” said by Dr Michael Hastings, from the UK Medical Research Council’s laboratory of molecular biology.

You can ameliorate one of the consequences that if you can keep the sleep-wake cycle as solid as possible you are unlikely to reverse the neuro-degeneration.

Prof Derk-Jan, from the Surrey Sleep Centre, cautioned that retired shift worker still had lower sleep quality than people who had never done night shift.

He said “So some of these effects may not be so readily or rapidly reversed”

And also he added a few words for this as “we now accept that shift work may not be good for your physical health, but this shows your brain function is affected, and I think that finding will surprise many people.”
