Home made tips for winter eye care

Any season, we oftenly take care about our eye safety. But in the winter season, we have to concentrate more about the effect of snow on eyesight and the total body as well. Lack of humidity sucks up all the moisture causing dryness of eyes. Here are some tips to follow to shield your eyes in winter season.

Safety Glasses /goggles

Make sure you have proper protection for your eyes in the form of goggles or safety glasses. Even though it is winter, the sun reflects off the snow, so UV protection sunglasses (or UV coated regular glasses) will protect you when walking, driving, shoveling. If you find something in your eye, try to repeat blinking to allow the eye to naturally remove the irritating material, or gentle eye irritation.

Drink Water

Protect your eyes from cold and lack of 
humidity. This makes eyes feel like sandpaper when you first wake up or throughout the day.  So drink a lot of good water (six glasses a day, if possible) and make the eyes look glossy.

Keep your eyes moist

The more heat or air circulation from a fire or heater can cause dryness and irritation of the eye. It can be particularly painful and annoying for those who are suffering from dry eye. The body doesn’t properly produce tears due to its chronic condition. Try to sit far away from heat sources. It is better to use artificial tears or a humidifier to alleviate dryness.


Consume food such as green leafy vegetables, fruits, carrots, liver, cod liver, nuts in your daily diet. Eat right food for your eyes and body, make sure that enough fat, protein and vitamins in your daily diet.


Maintain regular hours and get plenty of sleep, so that you can relax your eyes, body and rebuild your retinal receptors in the dark. It is very important if not you will be under pressure, prestation, causing headache and irritated eyes.


Be strict about regular face, body & hand washing. Winter is the time viruses and bacterial infections that can easily infect your eyes & body.


Don’t forget to have regular exercise at whatever level that works for you. Stretch and breathe, of the face and body that helps in the proper circulation of blood all over the body. Many people avoid during winter as it’s a cold season. But it should be strictly followed.


Be careful not to apply sunscreen too close to the eyes or eyelids as it can enter the  eye and cause irritation. Use a good eye cream to protect the delicate eye area, especially during the winter months… Day and night.

Rose water

Applying a few drops of rose water, which has certain healing properties can soothe the eyes, especially if they are burning, running, irritable or dry. The way to apply it is by either putting a few drops through a dropper or soak cotton wads in rose water and squeeze them in your eyes. Make sure to keep your eyes closed for at least 7 to 10 minutes for maximum results. This is also effective in treating under eye circles. The liquid can also be used to get rid of dirt and dust from eyes.

When purchasing a bottle of this herbal water, make sure to watch out for these points:-

  • It needs to betransparent in color. If it appears bright pink, this means that the product has additives in it.
  • Also, look foringredients note mentioned on the label of the bottle. If it says anything over and above ‘rose water’, or out of expiry date, then it’s better not to buy it.

Humidifiers are effective

It’s better to have a humidifier rather than an air conditioner during winter. Because they help in keeping the skin moist.

Vitamin A & C

Food that are rich in Vitamin A and C has antioxidants which are super good for your lovely eyes. It helps to prevent all sorts of eye related issues such as dryness, inflammation and further improves your vision. Eat fruits and veggies which contain vitamin A and C, such as carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, red peppers, peas, tomatoes, oranges and papayas.

Cold water treatment

Puffiness of the eyes and redness can be removed by washing eyes with the splash of cold water few times in a day.

Relax your eyes with a slice of cucumber on them for a while.
