Menstruation is a sign of a bleeding disorder or hormonal problem and can result in anemia and weakness. It is very important to maintain hygiene and avoid eating pickles, the heat causing foods. At that time the body sheds the uterine lining along with blood. Women bear different kinds of problems during and before menstruation. The symptoms are mood swings, back pain, and abdominal cramps.
Symptoms during and before menstruation
Many women face the problem of painful breasts during menstruation. There may be heaviness and swelling in the breasts. This occurs due to hormonal changes and progesterone secretion during the menstruation.
Apply a cold compress on the breasts to reduce swelling and pain. Or massaging the breasts gently with warm olive or coconut oil will help to reduce the pain.
Nausea and vomiting
Nausea is not a serious issue, but it can be draining and make you weak and tired. They occur due to the production of prostaglandins during the menstrual cycle. It causes the walls of the uterus to contract, leading to nausea and cramps.
Take a small piece of fresh lemon and inhale the smell. Or drink peppermint or ginger tea will help to get out of vomiting sensation.
Acne and pimples on the skin
Skin breakouts with pimples, zits and acne that are common during menstruation. This is due to increase in the sex hormones and androgen in the body. It makes the skin’s oil glands overactive, that is causing the pores to become clogged.
Apply white toothpaste on the affected area and leave it till dry. Then rinse it off with warm water. Or apply a cold compress on the affected area will also help to reduce pain and inflammation.
Loose bowel movements
It is natural and not harmful at all. Loose bowel movements happen during the hormonal changes. Once menstruation starts, the body releases prostaglandins. If they are higher than they cause more contractions and lead to diarrhea like symptoms.
Eat yogurt and bananas to reduce the intensity to loose bowel movements. Or eat plain, boiled potatoes with soft cooked rice also help to feel comfortable for your stomach.
Swelling and puffiness in the body
The hormonal imbalance and increase in estrogen can cause excessive accumulation of fluid in the body tissues. It leads to water retention. It creates swelling and puffiness in different body parts. Feet, legs, stomach and breasts are the body parts where you can find swelling.
Drink dandelion or parsley tea a few times daily during your menstrual cycle. Or have a bath with Epsom salt for 15 – 20 minutes a day.
Rise in temperature
The body becomes warmer due to hormonal fluctuations during different phases. The basal body temperature also increases right after ovulation and continues to remain high until a few days before the next period.
Drink a few cups of basil or ginger tea to get relief from muscle aches, body pain, and fever. Or take a sponge bath or a regular bath in lukewarm water also help to relax your body and reduces body temperature.
Bloating is a common occurrence. 8 out of 10 women suffer from bloated stomach. The major fluctuation of hormones, namely estrogen and progesterone lead to fluid retention, swelling and a feeling of bloating near the abdominal area. It is uncomfortable and annoying symptom.
Drink more water to reduce bloating. You can also drink a few cups of an herbal tea like chamomile, ginger, fennel or green tea to prevent bloating. It reduces your intake of salt, starch, sugar and refined carbohydrates.
There will be a close relation between headaches and hormonal changes in the body. Estrogen and progesterone may affect headache related chemicals in the brain that causes headaches. Migraines report headaches before or during their periods.
Apply a cold compress on your forehead to get relief from headache. Or apply the mint leaves juice on your forehead and temples.
A small clump of blood in the menstrual flow occurs in many women. They usually are normal, harmless. The clots may be bright red, dark red, brown, or even black. They occur due to the normal shedding of the uterine lining.
Keep a warm compress on your lower abdomen for about 10 – 15 minutes for a few times a day. It will improve blood flow and prevent clots. If the clots are bigger and higher in quantity, consult your gynecologist.
Brown blood discharge
The brown blood discharge is due to oxidization that occurs when the blood stays in the ovaries for a longer time and the color changes to brown.
