Tips for how to protect eyes?

Eyes are the most valuable parts of our body. They need to be protected from various stressful conditions. Protecting eyesight is also one of the most important things in our life. Avoiding this may cause some type of sight-threatening eye problems. Sometimes this may lead to loss of vision too. So one has to protect them by following some of these techniques.

Fruits and vegetables

A balanced diet is necessary for protecting the eyes and also for healthy eyes, so make sure that the diet containing lots of green vegetables like spinach, carrots, beetroot and yellow fruits including mango, orange and papaya which are rich in carotene (A precursor of Vitamin A), milk, nuts, beans, egg. This helps in the development and increasing longevity of eyes as well.

Antioxidants

This protects the eyes from free radicals, which are released from our body. This prevents cataract and age related eye diseases. Antioxidant substances include Vitamin A, B, C, beta-carotene, selenium, lycopene, zinc and lutein and can be found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, some meats, poultry and fish (salmon, tuna, oily fish). This also helps in reducing health related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts which are more common nowadays.

Avoid smoking

Smoking is very prone to getting cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration. Sometimes it may lead to damage of vision, voice box and finally cause damage to brain nerves. So avoiding smoking is mandatory.

Usage of sun glasses

A good quality sun glasses protect eyes from UV rays. Frequent exposure of these rays may lead to a chance of getting cataracts and macular degeneration. Make use of the polarized lenses so that they can reduce glare when driving.

Sage of safety eye goggles

Wear safety glasses mandatory in the places of hazardous and blast areas, whether you are at job or home.

Wear eye protective’s (helmets, face masks or sports goggles with polycarbonate lenses) to shield your eyes while playing hockey, cricket, or other games which can cause eye injury.

Avoid staring computer screen

Staring at a computer screen for too long can cause:

Eyestrain, blurry vision, trouble seeing at long distances, dry eyes, headaches, neck, back, and shoulder pain. So in meanwhile look away from the computer screen and also follow some tips to protect eyes.

  • Check the monitor screen is at least 50-60 cms far away while using computer.
  • Short, frequent breaks are better than longer, less frequent time away from the screen. Try to take breaks 2-3 minutes every 15-20 minutes, 5 minutes every 30 minutes, or 10 minutes every hour.
  • Do not forget to blink periodically. Staring at computer screens can dry our eyes and cause redness and irritation.
  • Check the expiry of your glasses which you will them for computer use.
  • Use an anti glare screen in order to avoid glare from windows, lights.

Regular physical examination

If any changes in the normal vision, swelling, redness, or any other problems are observed in eyes don’t hesitate for examination because these may further lead to disaster effect such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Avoid over strain

Much strained eyes prone to vision problems. So during working hours having breaks for a while, working in good lighting environments, blinking frequently, wearing proper glasses, maintaining good air quality. This helps for refreshment and having good eyesight. Always try to be with healthier eyes.

Minimize makeup

Avoid wearing eye makeup. As much as possible, skip or minimize the eyeliner and mascara, as they can cause unnecessary stress resulting in dryness of the skin around your eyes.

Ensure that your lenses are clean and free from any protein deposits. Always wash hands before handling lenses. Opt for monthly disposable lenses for that fresh feeling.

Usage of lenses

Change solution of lens every day. Store lenses in fresh solution only. Cold water is   used to wash eyes after removing the lens.

Television viewing

Avoid seeing TV very close to it. 5-6 meters away from it is preferable.

Eye exercises

When you are spending a lot of time on a computer? Make a habit of doing eye exercises, blinking, and massaging   actions   which gives very relaxing feeling.
