How to make Fish curry by adding mango – Healthy south Indian seafood fish curry / Meen kolambu recipe

Yes due to the fish bones present in the fish it will take time to eat but the taste is really awesome if you try to avoid without eating bones. Lot of varieties can be made with this fish like fish fry, fish kolambu, fish curry, fish gravy, fish biriyani and so on. Though it is easy to cook but you need to be careful while preparing. Adding correct ingredients can give a new shape to the dish.

Till now I grew up eating only fish fry and curry but last week I visited the south side of india to my relatives house. There I have tasted a different flavor of fish kolambu. Silently started eating and tasting the flavors but I have found a special ingredient in my plate i.e MANGO. Yes its mango pieces which are added in the fish curry. Because of this mango the dish taste little sour. I immediately asked my grandmother that how did she prepared this tasty and noted the recipe. After reaching my native I have just started trial version of the recipe. It sounds yummy.

Fish curry ingredients

  • Fish – 1kg
  • Tamarind – 50grms
  • Mango – 1
  • Onions – 3
  • Oil – ½ cup
  • Cumin seeds – 2tbsp
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1tbsp
  • Coriander seeds – 2tbsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1tbsp
  • Red chili powder – 3tbsp
  • Salt (required)
  • Tomatoes – 2
  • Green chilies -4
  • Coriander leaves
  • Curry leaves

Washing the fish is also an important thing if you want to prepare the curry with great taste. By washing the bad smell from the fish leaves and gives good smell. Ingredients required for washing the fish

  • Butter milk – 1 cup
  • Lemon – 1
  • Crystal salt – 3tbsp
  • Turmeric – ½ tbsp

How to wash the raw fish before cooking

Step 1: Take the fish in a vessel and wash it for 2 to 3 times with plain water.

Step 2: Pour out the water from the vessel.

Step 3: Now add butter milk, lemon, turmeric and crystal salt to the fish pieces.

Step 4: Mix them with hand so that these ingredients will get mix up with the fish pieces.

Step 5: Keep this a side after mixing.

Step 6: After 5 minutes wash the fish pieces with fresh water.

Collect and keep this a side.

How to cook fish curry with mango

Step 1: Take a small bowl add tamarind to it.

Step 2: Add water and soak it. Keep this a side.

Step 3: Chop the onions, chilies, tomatoes into a fine pieces.

Step 4: Take the mango and cut this into medium size pieces. Don’t throw the mango nut because the taste lies in it also. So keep it along with mango pieces.

Step 5: Now take the soaked tamarind bowl and start making juice by removing extra pulp.

Step 6: Collect the obtained juice into a separate vessel.

Step 7: Add 4 glasses of water, turmeric, red chili powder and garlic ginger paste.

Step 8: Now put some required salt to this liquid. Mix well the liquid and keep a side.

Step 9: Take big wide and flat vessel (fish pan which is showed in image).

Step 10: Keep this vessel on stove by adding oil. Heat it in medium flame.

Step 11: Add chopped onions and green chilies to the oil and fry it nicely for 5 minutes.

Step 12: Now add chopped tomatoes and curry leaves. Fry it for 5 minutes.

Step 13: Pour the tamarind juice which we made before into this vessel.

Step 14: Mix it well. Allow the juice to boil for 10 minutes in high flame.

Step 15: Now put the fish pieces into the boiling juice. Spread it nicely so that the pieces should dip into the liquid.

Step 16: Cook it for 5 minutes by covering with lid.

Step 17: After that add mango pieces which you kept a side.

Step 18: Spread the mango pieces in the boiling juice. Cover the vessel with lid.

Step 19: Cook it in low flame for 10 minutes.

How to prepare fish masala for curry

Step 20: Meanwhile keep separate pan on the stove.

Step 21: Add coriander seeds in low flame. Fry and collect it into small jar.

Step 22: In the same pan add fenugreek seeds and fry them. You can smell the fragrance, so collect them also into the same small jar. Turn off the flame.

Step 23: In the same heat pan add cumin seeds and leave it for 1 minute in that heat. Collect it into the same jar.

Step 24: Let the ingredients in the jar get cool for 5 minutes. Grind them into fine powder. Fish masala powder is ready.

Continuing the process….

Step 25: After that add this masala powder to the boiling fish mango curry.

Step 26: Mix it well by holding the vessel with cloth. Give movements to the vessel by turning slowly the vessel into clock wise directions. Don’t use the stirring spoon.

Step 27: Garnish the dish with coriander leaves and turn off the flame.
