How to cook channa dhal bonda / purnalu

A famous andhra sweet Channa dhal/ purnalu prepared at the time of festivals and special occasions. Channa dhal is delicious sweet with jaggery taste. Channa dhal is also known as pappu bondalu, purnalu. Instead of rice and urad dhal purnalu can be prepared in different methods using green gram, moong dhal.  Let us see how to prepare channa dhal/purnalu at home in a short time.


  • Channa dhal- 1 cup
  • Jaggery- 1 cup
  • Elachi powder- 1 spoon

For wet flour:

  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Urad dhal – ¼ cup
  • Salt – pinch


For stuff:

Step 1: Soak channa dhal in water for 1 hr

Step 2: Drain channa dhal and keep aside.

Step 3: Mix jaggery into a fine powder. Add ¼ cup of water to jaggery.

Step 4: Make into fine syrup. Add elachi powder and place a lid.

Step 5: Grind channa dhal into paste.

Step 6: Dump channa dhal paste into jaggery syrup and mix well.

Step 7: Now stuff is ready.

For wet flour:

Step 1: Soak rice and urad dhal for 1hr

Step 2: Grind both of them by adding water.

Step 3: Leave wet flour for 15 min

To make purnalu

Step 1: Take a pan, heat oil till it smokes.

Step 2: Make stuff into small balls.

Step 3: Dump balls into wet flour and drop into oil.

Step 4: Fry the balls till it turn into brown colour.

Step 5: Serve in a plate and add some ghee to make it tastier.
