Natural home remedy for oily scalp dandruff

Dandruff or seborrhea is one of the most common scalp diseases that most of the people are suffering from. It can affect people of any age group. All types of dandruff treatment and over the counter ant-dandruff shampoos, but this are one sticky problem that keeps coming back. As it is a common disorder and around 50% of the population keeps getting dandruff. Human hair gets greasy when it is not washed enough. The problem of dandruff itself is not very serious but it is embarrassing and irritating indeed. For some people naturally have oily scalps, even if they shampoo frequently. In certain cases it can lead to other skin problems such as, pimples, acne or even worse, it can lead to social problems and lowered self-esteem.

Lack of proper hair care: Proper hair care should be an essential part of your routine if you wish to stay away from dandruff.

Improper diet: A diet which is deficient in vitamins, zinc and fats can lead to dandruff.

Stress: Too much stress can encourage the growth of dandruff. Stress includes skin problems.

Tips for oily scalp dandruff

Baking soda

Baking soda clears flakes and scalp of dandruff. Baking soda soaks up the oil in your scalp. Take 3-4 teaspoons of baking soda. Apply the baking soda on your scalp and massage your scalp for half a minute. Leave it for about 2 minutes and rinse with warm water.

You can also add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the shampoo you are using. It will remove dandruff from your scalp.

Egg yolk

Egg yolk helps to remove excess oils on your hair. The vitamin E present in it makes your hair soft and smooth. Take 2 egg yolks and beat them well. In this add a few drops of lemon juice. Mix them well and apply this mixture on your wet hair. Leave it for about 5 minutes. Rinse it off thoroughly so that no residue is left behind. Repeat this for three times a week.

Lemon Juice

Lemon is rich in vitamin C and citric acid. It helps to remove dandruff from your scalp. You just squeeze the juice from lemon. Apply 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to your scalp and leave it for about 2 minutes. Rinse your hair with normal water. And then take 1 tablespoon of juice left with 1 cup of warm water. Rinse your hair with this and it helps to remove dandruff, acts as a conditioner and shine your hair. Repeat this daily for 7 – 10 days.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar helps to restore the acid/alkaline balance of the scalp. It also cures greasy dandruff and prevent oily scalp. Take 3-4 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and mix it with equal amount of water. Apply it over your hair and massage you hair until it gets dry. After getting it dried then rinses it with normal water.

You may also directly apply 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your scalp. And leave it for about an hour then wash off with water and then go for shampoo wash.

Witch hazel oil

Witch hazel oil is effective to remove oil from your scalp. Take 4 drops of witch hazel oil and mix them well. Add 2 tablespoons of water into it and mix them well. Apply this mixture on your hair with a dab of cotton ball. This will reduce the oiliness of the hair. And repeat it three to four times a week or every day for better results.

Apple Juice

Apple has enzymes which help to remove dead skin that causes flakes on your scalp. The acid present in apple helps to dry your scalp. Take an apple cut into pieces and blend juice from it. You need to take 2 tablespoon of apple juice and mix them with warm water. You need to apply this mixture into your hair and scalp. Massage your scalp and leave it for about 20 minutes. Rinse them with fresh water. Repeat it twice a day until the oily scalp and dandruff disappears.


Tea has tannic acid that will make your hair dry. You need to just boil tea leaves or tea powder in a glass of water. Strain the solution and wait until it gets lukewarm state. Apply this tea mixture on your scalp and hair. Leave it for 3 – 5 minutes. Rinse it off with water and shampoo your hair to get relief from oily hair.

Aloe vera gel

Aloe Vera is a good for damaged skin. It helps to get rid of dandruff flakes the clears damaged skin. It contains antibacterial and antifungal properties which further helps in healing process. Take out gel from aloe vera leaf. Apply aloe vera gel to your scalp and hair. Massage gentle and leave it for about an hour. Rinse your hair with normal water and if you need you can add few drops of lemon to the aloe vera gel before you are going to apply aloe vera gel.


Honey is good for health and hair. You need to take 2 tablespoon of pure honey and add one egg yolk into it. Mix them well and allow it to dissolve for 30 minutes. Now you can apply this mixture to your hair and massage your hair for few minutes. Leave it for 20 minutes then rinse it properly. Use a deep shampoo to wash your hair. Repeat the process twice a week to get rid of oily hair.

Bath soap

Using of bath soap on your hair is found to be an effective home remedy to get rid of excess oil in your hair. Use bath soap on your hair while you are bathing. Apply it on your scalp and hair and leave it for about two minutes and wash it off completely. Repeat it once a week on your hair to get rid of excess oil.

Henna and soap nut powder

Both henna and soap nut powder helps to clear dandruff from your scalp. You need to mix 8 tablespoon of henna and 2 tablespoons of soap nut powder in a bowl. Slowly add water in it and stir them to avoid lumps. Prepare it into a thick paste. Apply this paste to your scalp and hair. Leave it for about 30-45 minutes. Rinse them off with normal water.

If you have grey hairs try to avoid henna as it can stain your hair with its inherent shade.

Healthy diet

You need to maintain a healthy diet. If you change your diet according to this you will get rid of excess oil in your hair. You have to drink plenty of water in order to protect your body from dehydration. You should avoid consuming lot of oily or greasy foods. Add healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, and fish in your diet. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables to keep your scalp healthy.
