Seasonal changes make us sick and one of the most common illness that comes is a cough. Though you are an adult or a kid its really a bad feeling to make a day with cough. It’s not just makes irritation to the one with a cough, but others also because the germs will get transferred through the medium of air to the nearby people too. Cough syrups are now a days a risky thing to consume because all it is made of drugs which makes our health sick without our knowledge about it. So, there are some natural ways that can be done at home to get good relief from cough. These home remedies are common from the ages of our grandparents or sometimes older than them too.

Natural home remedies for cough

Honey best home remedy

Honey is the best and really works well for cough, especially for children. Unlike any other medicine for cough, honey does not cause any side effects such as drowsiness. In the West, honey is not given to the infants unlike in India. Honey is an effective remedy for sore throat. Mix honey with tea or lukewarm water or even lemon juice. Replace sugar with honey for treating cough.

Ginger tea for cold and cough home remedy

The best and most efficient home remedy is sip when you’re feeling stuffed up and not able to breathe. The ginger tea is delicious, warming and little spicy. The aromatic constituents like capsaicin or piperine are the best compounds that helps to relieve from cold. The ginger is the compound of gingerol and helps to relieve congestion quick. The ginger has less inflammation of mucous membranes that line the nasal passages and the sinus cavity. The inflammation contributes greatly to the buildup of pressure and congestion. The swelling goes down mucous with a flow out instead of clogged nose. Take 6 – 8 tablespoons of grated ginger root, a pinch of cinnamon, lemon juice, honey, 4 cups of freshly boiled water and a glass jar of water. Let the water boil and pour it in jar by placing a ginger in 1 quart glass and sprinkle some cinnamon. Let them steep for about 30 – 40 minutes. Cover the jar with essential oil that belongs in your cup. Strain the solution and add honey, lemon into it. Mix them well and sip it. Breathe in the steam and store the remaining in fridge for up to 24 hours. Drink this mixture for at least 3 times in a day.

Natural homemade red onion and honey cough syrup

The natural home remedy for kids as well as adults. This helps to suffer from a cough uses brown cane sugar, red onions and raw honey. This helps to soothe and tasty cough syrup. Take an onion and peel it off. Cut it into horizontal slices. Start it with the base of the onion layer and slice it in a bowl. Alternatively, use it with layers of raw honey or brown sugar. This is extremely sweet and can add layers of onion and sweetener. Make sure that the entire onion is reconstructed in the bowl. Cover them and allow them with a sweetened onion to remain in a bowl on your counter for 12 – 15 hours or else if possible keep it overnight. In the next day morning, there will be a cup or more of sweet syrup in the bowl. The cough syrup is rich in nutrients, minerals and vitamins. Honey helps to fight against infection and soothe sore throats that are quite a cough. Take a spoonful as per required.

Try peppermint for cold

Peppermint leaves used its cooling effect to the sore throat. Boil the peppermint leaves in water and inhale the steam. The phlegm loosens, by the effect of Menthol. 

Honey tea with pepper for instant relief

Prepare tea decoction and add honey, pepper powder to it. Consume it hot. It gives immediate relief.

Lemons best natural home tip

Drink lemon juice, but don’t add ice cubes or sugar. Instead, add a pinch of salt and crushed pepper or pepper powder and now mix it well. Drink this for better result and kids may say no to this for them add some honey in it. This is a no harm remedy at home to feel better from the irritating cough.

Cloves to prevent cold

Place the clove at the side of your tongue, until it becomes you finish the spicy taste of it. Keep gulping the juice that comes out of clove while it is in your mouth. This really helps.

  • Chew the raw ginger (little) few times in a day.
  • You can also add honey to your ginger tea.

Mullein is an herbal plant that is mostly seen on the roadsides, sand pits, fields and waste areas. It can be prepared as a tea and can be consumed. In order to prepare tea with mullein, all you need to do is, boil the dried leaves and strain it. Have the cool tea at least 3 times a day for relief.

Thyme is also an herb. It is consumed in the form of tea. Boil the dried leaves and drink the potion.

Eucalyptus best ingredient for cold

  • Eucalyptus is another herb which again is used mostly for respiratory related issues. It has got an amazing property which helps in loosening the phlegm. It can be consumed orally by diluting it with water in the right proportions for its effect. It is toxic in nature, hence, you need to be aware of the proportions of the mixture.
  • Add a few drops of Eucalyptus oil to the boiling water for steam inhalation.

How to reduce cold with marshmallow?

Marshmallow is also consumed as tea, however, not a hot tea. The correct quantity of dried leaves should be cooked in water. Drink the cold liquid a couple of times in a day.

Way to reduce cold with coltsfoot

The leaves and flower, both are useful in treating cough. To prepare decoction, take a few leaves in a little water and boil it, allow it to boil down and add honey. Drink a cup of decoction twice a day.

Anise for cold prevention

These seeds are mostly found in the Mediterranean. Boil half cup of seeds in half cup of milk. Strain it, and have the hot potion.

Garlic tea to reduce cough for immune enhancing

Garlic has antibacterial and antiviral property. This natural herb fights against cold, flu and cough. Garlic helps to prevent cold. Drink fresh garlic tea that helps has healing properties. You can add a little amount of raw honey that helps to heal ailing. Take 2 – 3 garlic cloves and peel it off. Crush them well and add 2 cups of water and heat it. Let it boil for a few minutes. Then, lower the heat and let it simmer for 15 minutes. Strain the solution and allow it to cool down. Add a little amount of honey into it. If you want, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper into it. Squeeze a lemon and mix into the solution. Drink this tea to get rid of a cold quickly.

Turmeric best home remedy

Turmeric is loaded with curcumin, such as diferuloylmethane, desmethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin. These are good sources of antibacterial agent. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory, anti bacterial and anti viral properties. This helps to treat viral infections and relieves chest congestion. Take a glass of warm milk and add 1 teaspoon of turmeric into it. Drink warm milk before going to bed. Secondly, use this way is to take boiling hot water. Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric into it. Let them steam and inhale the vapors coming out of the boiling water to reduce cold. Thirdly, take a teaspoon of honey and mix it with two pinches of turmeric powder. At this 3 – 4 times a day. You just take a piece of turmeric in your mouth. Keep it in your mouth all over night that helps to cure chronic cold and also helps to relieve dry cough. Simply, burn dried turmeric root and just inhale the smoke coming out while burning. This gives quick relief from cough.

Apple cider vinegar used for good health

Apple cider vinegar has a wide variety of uses for health and beauty. It helps to reduce cough and cold. Take a tablespoon of two apple cider vinegar. Mix it with 8 -10 ounces of water. Drink this solution several times a day. If you don’t like the flavor and smell of apple cider vinegar, you can add honey and mix them with warm water. This helps to reduce coughing.

Drink plenty of water to be healthy

Drink water and fluids to keep you hydrated. Drink at least 7 – 8 glasses of water a day. This helps to reduce temperature. Water helps to flush out toxins from the body. This helps to adequate water intake to soothe the irritated throat and helps to lessen cough. This is the simplest way to reduce cough and good for health, and skin.

What’s & Not’s to eat

It is always good to have warm soups for a soothing effect for the throat. As talked above, you can prefer to have ginger, garlic, honey in your daily diets.

Avoid carbonated drinks, ice creams, chocolates, frozen foods, sour foods. Prefer to eat home food and avoid road side eateries and junk foods. Avoid oily foods as it aggravates the cough. Avoid sweets too, one can replace sugar with honey. You can have apples, pears, peaches and oranges too during cough. Drink lots of water and juices too.

I personally use the home remedies for cough, however, if the cough is persistent and not letting you free, then you must consult the physician. Prolonged cough is not good for health and may develop in other complications.
